American actor, screenwriter, and director Buck Henry has left us at the age of 89, on January 8th. Buck Henry Variety ObituaryR.I.P. Buck Henry
Along with his many other accomplishments, Henry deserves recognition for his feature film star turn in Milos Forman's wickedly funny U.S. debut, 1971's Taking Off. This sharp-edged yet warmly droll satire of middle-class mores, counterculture and the generation gap is little seen and unjustly neglected, owing most likely to music licensing issues keeping it from wide distribution for decades (it features numerous musical interludes, including performances by Carly Simon, Kathy "Bobo" Bates and the Ike & Tina Turner Review). In support of Henry's deadpan bemusement are colorful players Lynn Carlin, Paul Benedict, Vincent Schiavelli, Georgia Engel and Audra Lindley. Carlin and Henry, as concerned parents of a teenage runaway. Don't let those gravely serious expressions fool you: the best comedy is often played as dire calamity.
