Canadian composer George Blondheim has left us at the age of 63, on February 1st. He composed the music for such movies as The Gate II: Trespassers 1990, Red Scorpion 2 1994, Summer of the Monkeys 1998 and The Burial Society 2004, the video game Wirehead 1995, and TV movies such as Marilyn and Me 1992 and A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes: The Annette Funicello Story 1995. A. E. Hotchner, screenwriter, novelist, and playwright, passed away on February 15 at the age of 102. He perhaps best known for his friendships, including with Ernest Hemingway, about whom he wrote a memoir, "Papa Hemingway," and with his Connecticut neighbor, Paul Newman, with whom he founded Newman's Own, which dedicates all profits to charity. Nikita Waligwa, who played a young friend of Lupita Nyong'o's daughter in Queen of Katwe (2016), passed away today at the age of 15 from brain cancer. What a sad and tragic loss. Remembered at The Hollywood ReporterMay she rest in peace.

Opera singer Mirella Freni has died at the age of 84. Freni appeared in a number of films and recorded shows and was considered one of the great sopranos of her era.
R.I.P.
Mirella Freni sang Mimi in La Boheme in the first Live From The Met broadcast on PBS in, I think, 1977. That broadcast is why I love opera to this day. I will never forget it or her.

Georgian and Soviet film director Giorgi Shengelaia has left us at the age of 82, on February 17. He directed 14 films since 1961. His 1985 film The Journey of a Young Composer was entered into the 36th Berlin International Film Festival where he won the Silver Bear for Best Director. R.I.P. Giorgi Shengelaia

American actress, singer–songwriter and dancer Ja'Net DuBois has left us at the age of 74 (or 81 depending on sources), on February 18th. Maybe best known for her portrayal of Willona Woods, the neighborhood gossip maven and a friend of the Evans family on the sitcom Good Times, which originally aired from 1974 to 1979. DuBois additionally co–wrote and sang the theme song "Movin' on Up" for The Jeffersons, which originally aired from 1975 until 1985. She's remembered in Hollywood ReporterR.I.P. Ja'Net DuBois

British actor John Shrapnel has left us at the age of 77' on February 14th. As a stage actor, Shrapnel was a member of Laurence Olivier's National Theatre Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company. His film career included roles in Nicholas and Alexandra 1971, Pope Joan 1972, Hennessy 1975, Personal Services (1987), Testimony (1988), How to Get Ahead in Advertising (1989), England, My England (1995), 101 Dalmatians (1996), Notting Hill (1999), The Body (2001), K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) and Alien Autopsy (2006). He has also appeared in historical films such as Gladiator (2000) as Senator Gaius, Troy (2004) as Nestor, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) as Lord Howard and The Duchess (2008) as General Grey. German actress Sonja Ziemann has left us at the age of 94, on February 17th. In the 1950s, she was among Germany's most prominent actresses, awarded the 1950 Bambi for playing, together with Rudolf Prack, in Schwarzwaldmädel 1950. From the 1960s, she turned to more serious acting in international films such as The Secret Ways 1961 and The Bridge at Remagen 1969. She also appeared on stage and in television. R.I.P. Brazilian filmmaker, actor, composer, screenwriter, and television and media personality José Mojica Marins has left us at the age of 83, on February 19th. He was also known for creating and playing the character Coffin Joe (loosely translated from Zé do Caixão) in a series of horror movies; the character went on to become his alter ego as well as a pop culture icon in Brazil. Although he was known primarily as a horror film director, his earlier works were Westerns, dramas and adventure films. R.I.P. José Mojica Marins

British theater, television and movie actress Frances Cuka has left us at the age of 83, on February 16th. In 1958 she created the role of Jo in Shelagh Delaney's play A Taste of Honey, and continued in both West End and on Broadway, that started as a Theatre Workshop production. Pioneering African-American Nasa mathematician Katherine Johnson died today at the age of 101. She calculated rocket trajectories and Earth orbits for Nasa's early space missions and was portrayed in the 2016 Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. "Ms. Johnson had previously calculated the trajectory for the space flight of Alan Shepard - the first American in space. . .Such was her skill and reputation that [John] Glenn had asked for her specifically and had refused to fly unless she verified the calculations. Diana Serra Cary, known as Baby Peggy, the last surviving star of the silent era, passed away today at the age of 101. As a child star in the 1920s, she was the highest paid actor or actress in Hollywood. She retired from acting in 1938 and with great tenacity and resilience later turned to writing and publishing. In 2012 she was the subject of the excellent documentary, Baby Peggy: The Elephant in the Room.

American composer of film and television Bob Cobert has left us at the age of 95, on February 19th. His early work included composing the soap opera Dark Shadows. Maybe best known for his work with producer/director Dan Curtis, especially on the TV mini-series The Winds of War 1983 and War and Remembrance 1988.
