1933 Police Lieutenant: Well, Denham, the airplanes got him. Carl Denham: Oh no, it wasn't the airplanes. It was beauty killed the beast.

That's one of those movies that was very popular in its day but has since fallen into near obscurity. After watching Summer of '42 for the first time year, I was surprised to find that it was quite well known among Mainland Chinese audiences. Apparently it was championed by author Wang Shuo around 10 years ago, which lead to subtitled copies becoming available and the film being at least somewhat embraced as a lost cinema classic.

A lot of Kore-eda, Still Walking [2008], perhaps being the best example Most later Ozu also, Late Spring [1949], perhaps the best example

Just watched this one, Dear Heart 1964, two middle-aged loners with nothing in common, suddenly liking each others company.

I understand that The Last American Virgin while the title makes it sound like just another early '80s teen sex comedy is actually rather bittersweet at the end.
