There are singers who only dabbled in acting, some who did a one-off, and several who stuck with it and had major film careers. All will work for this thread, as long as they were singers first.
I'll start with Peggy Lee, a singer first and foremost from 1941 on. Though she didn't have much of an acting career, she was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actress in Pete Kelley's Blues (1955).

You guys are good! I gotta get this one in before someone else does: Judy Garland, who began her career in vaudeville as the youngest of the Gumm sisters. ![](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91ne6PNE4sL._SX425_.jpg)
Later nominated as Best Actress in A Star is Born (1954). ![](https://www.closerweekly.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/judy-garland-james-mason-a-star-is-born.jpg?resize=1180%2C869) And as best supporting actress in Judgement at Nuremberg (1961). ![](https://ewedit.files.wordpress.com/2019/08/judgment-at-nuremberg-1-2700.jpg?w=2700&h=2006)

I could make a case for Judy Holliday. She started in a Greenwich village group , the Revuers, doing songs and sketch comedy. Their musician was Leonard Bernstein.

More about the Revuers After working briefly as a switchboard operator for Orson Welles’s Mercury Theatre ensemble, she joined with several friends to form a comedy sketch troupe in 1939. Called the Revuers, the troupe (which included Betty Comden and Adolph Green) began performing at cafés and cabarets in New York City and later in Los Angeles and on radio. As a result of the Revuers’ success, Holliday signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox and played bit parts in three feature films in the mid-1940s.

Thanks for this amazing info, bat and marshamae . Simply fascinating! And Leonard Bernstein, too. Wow. There's a really interesting life story to be told about Judy Holliday, I think. I just learned yesterday (from TCM) that she had a genius I.Q. But when she was called to testify before HUAC in the early 50s, she talked like one of her ditzy characters and got away without having to name names. Very interesting woman, about which I know a little more, but I'll keep that part to myself. Sorry we lost her so soon. Have to say the same about Judy Garland in that regard, too.

Ethel Waters began singing as a young woman in vaudeville, then became a performer in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, appearing at the Cotton Club where she was discovered by Irving Berlin who brought her to Broadway. She began appearing in films in the 1930s and received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role in Pinky (1949). ![](https://www.bam.org/media/13095535/18-CTEK-1098-pinky-613x463.jpg)

I don't know if that's all or not. I plan to keep looking when I have time. Ethel Waters just popped into my head. There are probably even more like her, but I can't say for sure.
There are at least a few more, I just realized (and probably more than that). I'll see if you or others find them; if not, I'll add them.
Oh, what the heck. I'll add one more now: Queen Latifah, nominated as best supporting actress for Chicago (2002).

Theodore Bikel was a folk singer before he was a film actor. He was nominated for his role in THE DEFIANT ONES. ![](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51qga81klML._SS500.jpg) ![](https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Sal8ZUHgDrY/WN3jloDCBUI/AAAAAAAAt2s/mGd_TwKZYpEB2NA59-8mL94FKvBIMRcLgCLcB/s1600/The-Defiant-Ones.jpg)

jervistetchTheodore Bikel I used to go to see his concerts at Town Hall in NYC and followed his movie career … he was one of the crew in the African Queen and was on stage in The Sound of Music. I have a pile of his records still. Did a happy dance when he was finally nominated for Defiant !
