Rumours have flown around for a long time that a future incarnation of the Doctor might be a lady. Now it's rumoured that actress Michaela Coel is in the running for the next regeneration, after Capaldi leaves. I think it would be pretty cool to have a new Female Doctor, but some fans seem to be against it. Anybody here have any thoughts?

I'm still waiting for a black doctor. It should have been Paterson Joseph seven years ago.

I am not against a female Doctor. But i don`t really see the need for it. They should rahter just bring back Romana if they want a female time lord.

I wouldn't mind a female Doctor, though I feel kind of indifferent to it right now. I think they should choose the best actor for the job, and in my opinion, I don't think gender or race are big factors in someone's ability to portray the Doctor.
So I would vote "It's a good idea" but I would add: only if the person is right for the role. I'd probably watch it and give the new Doctor a chance either way. I don't think it should be done just for the sake of having a female Doctor, though.

So many are mentioning Tilda Swinton, and I sure can see it.
I'm more worried about the writing than who's playing the Doctor though.

I'm still waiting for a black doctor. It should have been Paterson Joseph seven years ago. You may get your wish; Michaela Coel is a black woman. It's interesting that the showrunners have carefully prepared the way on this issue. They've been dropping little bits into the show to indicate that gender swapping regenerations are possible for years - Matt Smith thinking he was a girl when he felt his hair. Mention that the Corsair had a female regeneration. And of course then showing a male Time Lord regenerate into a woman. To me, that says that the producers wanted to lay the groundwork and test the waters with fans. Which shows that they clearly at least want the option. As for why to do it? Well, two things. One, the common objection to this is "why not just get the best actor for the part!" Well okay, but what if the best actor happens to be an actress? Then you'd be okay with it, right? But if you look at the history of Doctor Who, one of the great strengths of the show is that it constantly reinvents itself. The whole idea of Regeneration was invented in the first place to allow them to try an actor who was different and new. Nobody complained that the second Doctor wasn't an old white haired guy, saying "why change it!" The intention of regeneration has always been to reinvent the show by giving us a Doctor who is markedly different from the previous Doctor. It reinvigorates the show, keeps it fresh and new. It seems to me that a female Doctor would accomplish exactly that.

Short answer: NO.
Long Answer: I used to be very ANTI-Female Doctor. Now days I accept that the possibility may one day be a reality, but I don't like it. It would have to be a genuine they cast it that way because the actor fit the styling and type of character they were looking for at the time. Not because of popular demand to do it, just because. There is too much of that going around already. There are factions of fans who complain if a show or movie doesn't have a guy character, or if minorities are not represented. Don't make the Doctor female for the shock value of making the traditionally male character a female, because of popular demand and because the mythos of the series indicates it is a possibility.

No. The Doctor is a male character. Period. Just bring back Romana and give her her own series.

The Doctor's character can radically change at any given moment, and this has been an integral part of the show for the last fifty years! Saying "the doctor is a male character" is no different from saying there can't be a short Doctor because "the doctor is a tall character".

I don't care. To me, he's a male character and I'm not budging on the issue. If you want a series about a female timelord, just give Romana a series.

Why not? If they made the Master a woman, why not the Doctor.

A short man is just as much a man as a tall man. besides, he's a grandfather. He can't suddenly turn into a grandmother.

I'm neutral, I wouldn't mind a female Doctor but I don't like the idea of it being done just for the sake of it. I think that if the new Doctor is female, no matter how good she may be, that idea of it ticking boxes and making a point will be floating around a lot of minds and for that reason I can't see them doing it this time around. But who knows, it'll be interesting to see who gets cast, male or female, for the next incarnation.
I thought Michelle Gomez did a fine job of Missy, there was no speculation about whether the next Master would be male or female (none that I was aware of anyway), it just happened, and I think it worked. The speculation surrounding the next Doctor is so huge that if a female does get the part, she'll be scrutinized to hell.
When I imagine a new Doctor, I do picture a male character, but I guess that's because it's how it has always been... And because I really want David Thewlis, he'd be an awesome Doctor.
