Star Wars was watchable, even good at times. I only saw the first of The Hobbit films, so really I shouldn’t be voting, but I didnt particularly care for it.

both trilogies are disappointing, but the Hobbit trilogy is better hands down. Both trilogies were less than the sum of their parts, which is a fatal flaw for a trilogy as a whole! 1. The core issue with the Hobbit trilogy is that it was too little material (a short children novel) drawn out and blown up to three monumental 3 hours movies. 2. The problem with the ST is that it rehashed the original trilogy badly and amateurishly (without any roadmap) and damaged the entire sage irreparably - as well as (amazingly) being deliberately contradictive in itself. Moreover, the ST was utterly uncreative and lacking in terms of art design (new iconic space ship designs etc) and worldbuilding (the universe and it's institutions did not make any sense anymore). A cardinal sin with regard to the most imaginative blockbuster franchise ever. - The Force Awakens (4.5/10) vs. An Unexpected Journey (6.5/10) - AUJ, bc TFA is an unoriginal and uncreative hack job of a rehash that diminished the OT achievements and character arcs. All you get is repainted spaceships and mystery boxes. - The Last Jedi (6/10) vs. The Desolation of Smaug (6/10) - difficult, TLJ, bc it has a proper ending (the desperate cat and mouse scenes in Smaug were embarrassing filler). And Last jedi is so bad its good at times (CantoBite plot redundancy, Cherry Poppins Space Leia, Jake Skywalker milked for laughs, Rose's Kiss Assault, Holdo's hyperspace man-euvre etc) and you gotta respect a man who gives you the finger by subverting expectations this blatantly. He essentially repainted Empire but with hilariously bad colors and by largely ignoring or negating TFA's mystery boxes. - Rise of Skywalker (4.5) vs. The Battle of Five Armies (5/10) - Bot5A was bad but TROS was such an ugly, plot hole filled mess that spends much time undoing TLJ; it also destroyed major elements of the saga (Anakin bringing balance, Palpatine as most brilliant schemer ever etc). Five Armies looked ugly and was void of a real story but it served its purpose as Act 3. Btw, there is a new and very nuanced analysis of the ST as a whole by D Stuart (the writer-musician), many many will follow (and copy what he says); highly recommended;

I'm surprised it has gotten so close in the poll.

But at least The Hobbit Trilogy was planned out in advance If you watch the special features on the home video release, you'd know it actually wasn't. Pretty sad for a trilogy of films based on a pre-existing story....

Star Wars sequel trilogy is better. I just know that I will rewatch it in the future while I will never watch the Hobbit trilogy ever again.
However, I will watch the Maple Films fan edit of the Hobbit films again at some point. But I'll never watch the films as released again.

Star Wars by a mile for me. I found The Hobbit to be a bloated mess at 3 films, while Star Wars, except for Canto Bight, I felt needed even more.

Pretty sad for a trilogy of films based on a pre-existing story.... I know they started with a plan for two Hobbit films and expanded to it three, but that's different from having no plan at all. Would you please elaborate on what the special feature had to say about this?

This article elaborates a bit: www.theguardian.com/film/2015/nov/19/peter-jackson-battle-of-the-five-armies-i-didnt-know-what-the-hell-i-was-doing-when-i-made-the-hobbit“Because Guillermo Del Toro had to leave and I jumped in and took over, we didn’t wind the clock back a year and a half and give me a year and a half prep to design the movie, which was different to what he was doing,” reveals Jackson. “It was impossible, and as a result of it being impossible I just started shooting the movie with most of it not prepped at all."

Hmm...
TFA > AUJ TLJ < DOS TROS > Bot5A
SW sequels are slightly better.

This is true. Print aside, here it is right from the mouth of the crew and Jackson.
