The mustache thing was Paramount being incredibly petty. Cavill could had just a fake one or something.

The mustache thing was Paramount being incredibly petty. Cavill could had just a fake one or something. There's no reason why Superman can't have a moustache. It would be less distracting than the CGI. They could have also given him a mullet to take the edge of the 'stache.

The problem is that if they gave him facial hair in the reshoots, then every single one of his scenes would have to be reshot, otherwise he’d have a beard in one scene, while being clean shaven in another. |
