I'm going to my local comic-con tomorrow for the weekend and plan on grabbing some DC books (Not single issues, but compilations/trades) so I can start immersing myself into the DC universe (I'm a newb with only the basic knowledge of Superman & Batman when it comes to certain storylines, character relationships, and personalities).
I have however started watching Justice League on Netflix with my best friend who's a comic fan and have fallen in love with Young Justice. I also have a DC Comics Encyclopedia that I got for Christmas but unfortunately haven't really been able to take a good look at due to my sheer laziness... đ
Who are some good DC characters to read to jump into the universe?

Green Lantern for the majority of the 2000's was the best written series in DC. From Green Lantern: Rebirth on through Blackest Night, the writing was phenomenal.
Buy: Justice League: Identity Crisis - You won't be disappointed.

There are 7 in all, so a tidy sum, and then I had to spend some time bookmarking them as you can't really read them through on an individual basis but have to jump across issues. Still a great read though.

Martian Manhunter Son of Mars is a good read and gives a background to one of DC's (IMHO) better and interesting characters who is not used enough.

I'd like to read some stories involving some of the female heroes, any good title suggestions in this department? In particular, I'd like to find some Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Miss Martian, Power Girl and Batgirl.

The Legend of Wonder Woman (2015-) Vol. 1: Origins Zatanna by Paul Dini (Zatanna (2010-2011)) Power Girl: Power Trip Batgirl Vol. 1: Silent Knight I can't speak for the Power Girl graphic novel, having never read it. I have the others and highly recommend them. You will need to pick up the Teen Titan novels to catch up on Miss Martian

Blackest Night was the final nail in the coffin for my modern age DC comic buying. Couldn't really say what is worth reading now. If I can recommend any titles from the past DC Hero Universe my stock answer is The Dark Night Returns, Batman Year One, Saga Of The Swamp Thing. Green Arrow, JLA and Detective runs in mid-late 80s were good. Couldn't really recommend much Superman as I find the character utterly boring.

I think it's just been re-released with a second solo story included. Worth reading.

I can go over the history of DC to give you some pointers, but lets go with more recent, less expensive stuff.
Get Rebirth special #1 which starts the Rebirth line of comics.
As trades get Superman Rebirth, Action Comics Rebirth, Batman Rebirth, Wonder Woman Rebirth vols 1 AND 2 (those are separate but connected stories), and Titans Rebirth.
Honestly, IMO, the entire Rebirth line of comics is excellent and far improved over the previous New 52 line, but in particular the Superman books.
