er, no..10 minutes viewing was enough to get the measure of that one; sub-par ipcress file spy stuff. Biker1 has nailed it. Furie had directed the excellent Ipcress File only two years previously. A tired attempt to repeat that success. Sinatra dials it in and Peter Vaughan is way over the top as a pantomime villain. Laughable ending. Sinatra is hopelessly trapped and betrayed on all sides when ... with one mighty bound he is free!

And I seriously intended to see it through... Just been looking up some film guides and I can see why I'm not familiar with it. This quote from P. Kael is a good one.... ' it might be a good movie to read by if there were a light in the theatre'

A definite career low for Frank. Makes THE KISSING BANDIT look like CITIZEN KANE , although I rated THE FIRST DEADLY SIN even lower

The director, Sidney Furie, who had made the excellent "Ipcress File" two years earlier, shows (again) an instinctive feel for this genre, using many clever camera angles to inject a unique visual style into the picture. Maybe his style is a little too controlled at times (the movie is stiffly paced), but it's also unusually grim and thoughtful. And he also knows how to keep the story comprehensible - which is a relief for anyone who has seen such monstrosities as "The Kremlin Letter". Overall, this is an engrossing thriller, with an ending that's perhaps a little too abrupt, but also with a great, mature performance by Frank Sinatra.

You are too kind to it.... suspect I'd be more forgiving if I rewatched now though.... Just checked Sinatra CV - I think I've now seen the lot - and although MIRACLE OF THE BELLS, DOUBLE DYNAMITE and JOHNNY CONCHO are all dire.... .DEADLY SIN is the bottom rung on the ladder to cinematic excellence
