Yes, it's beautiful to look at and the score is great...but it seems so generic and blah to me, compared to other Disney animated movies. I am watching it for the first time today as an adult (I had a Disney free childhood), it has all the usual rabbits and owls and birds as friends, the nervous horse, evil queen villainess, beautiful princess/handsome prince etc...seems to be a whole lot of "been there, done that before." I guess they didn't stray too far from the formula that worked in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and the rest that came before it.

It's actually my favorite animated feature, plus it has Maleficent.

It's actually my favorite animated feature, plus it has Maleficent. And thank God it has Maleficent, who is the brightest spot of the whole movie. Not knocking the film so much as pointing out the familiarity of all the characters. Those three fairies are like three little Fairy Godmothers from Cinderella. Not super original, but it works over all.

I loved the fairies, and Maleficent scared the heck out of me! Yeah, it's not exciting and the music isn't great, but it holds a special place in my heart.

I may have to watch that Angelina Jolie movie to find out.

It's cute and evil. I liked it.

I'm quite fond of Sleeping Beauty for the visual beauty of the animation and for Maleficent (of course), but I agree with you, Lebowskidoo 🦞, that it's somewhat bland. Among Disney's "princess films," I prefer Snow White (my favorite) and Cinderella; among their animated films in general, my absolute favorite is Pinocchio. Still, I think that, like TheOriginalPinky, Sleeping Beauty holds a place in my heart as well.

I'm not fond of the style or animation in Sleeping Beauty. I was in my teens when it came out and devoted to the old hand painted style.
I finally made friends with this film when I was an au pair in Paris. One of my charges was a three year old boy. He had a book of sleeping beauty that he wanted to hear every night, but the character he referred to as The Bad Book Witch scared him to death and we had to be sure the book was closed with another book on top so she couldn't get out. I decided any character that could tap into tge imagination of a child with such power deserved another look. Her name in French got me too. She was called Malifique.
Later I had a Choose Your Own Adventure book based on Sleeping Beauty. It was a great language tool for 2nd graders . At the end of every two pages you were asked to choose what happened next. You had 4 choices , each with its own directions for how to find the next page. Again the kids took to it and I was reminded that the film and its characters were probably better than I thought.
I still don't care fir the animation and the score is one of Disney's weakest, even with lovely Mary Costa as Aurora

I never thought the film was boring. As a child, I though it moved quickly than dragged. True, Aurora doesn't have a personality, but I thought Philip was less wooden than the previous Prince Charmings (the 'No Carrots' scene). I believe the Three Good Fairies were one of my first intros to 'Girl Power.' Their rescue of Philip, Merriwhether taking care of the Raven, etc. And, of course, Malificent. I also enjoyed the visuals and the George Bruns instrumentals of Tchiakovsky's score.

I agree that Philip is a little less bland, Claudius (I'm trying to resist the temptation to ask, "How's Hamlet?"), but unfortunately I think Aurora, beautiful though she is, is one of the blander Disney princesses. I still like the picture purely for the gorgeous animation. Oh, and let me welcome you to the board!

Thank you for the welcome, Salzmank, although I'd rather direct that temptation to Graves rather than Shakespeare (oh well, Derek Jacobi made the same mistake when they asked him to play the title role in the 1976 BBC Serial. "I want to play Hamlet!" he replied).

I happen to really like Sleeping Beauty (we can agree to disagree). It's my easily my favorite of the Walt era princess movies. I'm not a big fan of Snow White & Cinderella. I have to agree Aurora is a bit bland but I like most of the other characters. Phillip was definitely an improvement over his predecessors. He had more scenes than the princes from Snow White & Cinderella. I actually like that Sleeping Beauty was more about the fairies & Maleficent than it was about Aurora & Phillip because it helps it stand from Snow White & Cinderella. Honestly in Snow White & Cinderella, we don't get to know the prince & the princess so I was glad that when Disney made Sleeping Beauty, Aurora was pushed out of the limelight. I will admit, despite all this it's still a generic story, it's pretty much the same plot as Snow White but the way the story is told is unique. I hope my post didn't come as intimidating, if it did I'm sorry that was not my intention. This blog sums up my opinion of Sleeping Beauty in a nutshell. Sleeping Beauty review

It's a shame that the three good fairies don't get much attention from feminists. Phillip could not have defeated Maleficent without the help of the 3 good fairies.

Out of the classic Disney films it's my favorite overall. Cinderella seems more forgettable to me.

Lebowskidoo 🦞"but it seems so generic and blah to me, compared to other Disney animated movies", The trick to enjoying a film I find, is just to watch a film and not compare it to others.
