Especially when there's a lot more pulp in his fiction?
Seriously though. Nobody, and I mean nobody, depicts cooler theatrical themes in their movies than Robert Rodriguez. I challenge you to name a director that does pulp better. So why isn't he as popular as Tarantino?

He is not a very good writer or director imo.
Alita: Battle Angel for example (one of his better rated movies) could have been a good movie using similar material, but I think it is a poorly made movie. The interaction between Waltz and Salazar is good and her character arc is good, but the rest is generic cliche crap and the cgi is completely unconvincing.
Sin City, From Dusk Till Dawn and the El Mariachi trilogy are the closest he has come to Tarantino and those movies, with the possible exception of Sin City, pale in comparison.
I remember the criticisms about Planet Terror compared to Death Proof when Grindhouse was released. Death Proof actually resembles the movies it is imitating, Planet Terror does not.
He did a good job with Machete in that regard though, but he is just mimicking 1970's exploitation movies, Tarantino takes material from those movies and combines them to make much better movies. The dialogue, cinematography, clever scripts and acting is what puts him ahead of the rest.

Racism! I did like Planet Terror at first, but after a couple of watches I realized it was a joke, not a real movie. Once the joke wore off..
I liked Machete though.
I think exploitation film done by the likes of Weinstein does not ring true as the real McCoy so it falls off the radar fast, especially for action genre fans. They are watching Charles Bronson or something.

I challenge you to name a director that does pulp better. Tarantino. Sure, RR is more pulp, but he's also JUST pulp. You wouldn't find a scene like Jules Winfield calmly explaining his self-actualization to Tim Roth in a RR movie, and you wouldn't find a lady pulling a cell phone out of her pussy in a QT movie. Plus half of RR's movies are shit for his kids.

You can't really compare the two.
Robert rodriguez is a multi-talent. This guy does everything on his films, from writing to casting, music, cinematography, editing, producing and directing. His films are also very kinetic and all over the place, taking inspiration from comic books, horror, sci-fi, action, exploitation and grindhouse films. Something that's more subdued in Tarantino's films. Even in a martial arts spectacle like Kill Bill there are long scenes without much happening, especially the second half (aka part 2). You can also see that Rodriguez had to hold back with Alita: Battle Angel, because it doesn't even feel like a film he directed.

As a person who liked Alita more tan Captain Marvel, he made some truly terrible choices on where to focus his attentions.
Part of that has o do with him being out of the studio system for forever, preferring to do his own stuff and that stuff was cheap looking.
Trantino is just the better director and writer as well and that's from someone who thinks he's more repetitive than visionary.

Tarantino is more consistent with his formula brand of movies. He has the talent to create pulp movies and sell them somehow as art.
RR does not has this talent in the same way, he is all over the place with genres and tone. Artistic diversity is not necessarily a bad thing though, it just makes it harder for the general audience to grasp for what the director stands.

Simply put: the movies he makes aren't as objectively good or widely appealing as Tarantino's.
Doesn't mean he's a bad filmmaker. He's just more niche.

Who says Tackytino is revered? Well, I guess he is, but only because contemporary cinematic criticism is pretty stupid.

They do have a thing in common and that's that they both cast (a lot of) their friends.

Isn't that kinda like asking why Michael Bay isn't as revered as James Cameron? One is a watered down version of the other.

Machete was awesome, Machete Kills was just annoying though. Rodriguez is hit or miss.

Rodriguez has an interesting filmography...he goes from dingers like Desperado and From Dusk til Dawn and then fell into stuff like Spy Kids and Sharkboy and Lava Girl for half a decade...then went through his grind house phase. Thereโs some really good movies scattered in there but he doesnโt have a consistent vibe throughout.
It also could be because QT brings in older or established Hollywood connections constantly but RR kinda has his small Mexican array of actors and actresses and thatโs about it. Not that thereโs anything wrong with it but it probably helps QTs presence that heโs so โinโ with so many Hollywood actors and actresses.

Both do tributes to B-movies in a fun way, but Quentin is usually able to add depth and unpredictable turns. Ummm... Robert is white.
