For instance, for the longest time I assumed "Con Air" was directed by Michael Bay (like The Rock, it was also a big dumb 90s action film starring Nicholas Cage) but apparently it was actually Simon West.

Well, many people think John Ford directed Red River. (Howard Hawks, actually.) John Ford was asked what he said when someone praised him for that film. He replied, "I say, 'Thank you.' "

For a long time I thought Howard Hawks directed The Thing From Another World, and only recently learned that Mel Brooks didn't direct To Be or Not to Be.

I definitely used to think all the Star Wars original trilogy were directed by George Lucas, not just the first.

Robert Zemekis did not direct The Goonies, it was Richard Donner.

For some reason I once thought Double Indemnity was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Never happened to me but to a buncha people I know. For years, they kept telling me Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man 3. I kept saying "No, sir!" And sure enough, on IMDb, it says under Director, "Incompetent Hack from Nowheresville who no one gives a fuck about."

Before I knew much about anything, I'd also assumed this was another Hitchcock...

Another great Hitchcock by someone else Stanley Donan this time ! Me too! Also: I attributed to Blake Edwards for a long time. Sorry Mr. Donen. That man is seriously underrated and overlooked.

Tim Burton didn't direct "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Only learned this in recent years. He fooled so many of us! Ah well, at least he gave us Beetlejuice and Batman Returns.

Most people wouldn’t know or care who directed a movie. It is just about the movie.
