Yup. Which is certainly not enough time for a director to have any input whatsoever in the material. Maybe they could get find someone who is instantly excited about their script, but my guess is they'll delibrately go the safe route to avoid any more problems. Which is smart in a way, but it will probably lead to a bland movie at best or a soulless movie at worst. Looks like they're going to have to cancel Doctor Strange 2. They're not going to cancel Doctor Strange 2 because their director left you moron. They'll find a replacement.

I’ve kinda-sorta lost interest in the MCU again (this previously happened to me after, what, Iron Man 3, and it didn’t come back until I saw Winter Soldier a year and a half or so ago), but I’d be completely on board with a wild, off-the-walls, horror-esque, Kirby/Ditko-at-their-most-’60s-surreal Dr. Strange movie. (I didn’t see the first one.) Looks like the director wanted to go that route and Feige didn’t, which is disappointing.

Though, I'm not sure the director was even capable of it. The first Dr Strange movie has some fun trippy action set pieces that make it worth seeing, but everything outside of those sequences is delibrately safe and formulaic. Presumably this was done out of fear of alienating general audiences. They took something meant to be weird and packaged it in very familiar superhero blockbuster tropes. I was hoping the second would abandon that safeness and really go for it. I was skeptical this would happen, now I'm positive that it won't. My interest in the MCU is also fading. Dr Strange and Thor Four were the only ones that really intrigued me. Now I'm down to just Thor.

It’s just strange they didn’t iron out anything as far as creative differences. In the past four years since the first one was released I mean. My guess is that the horror aspect of it is what caused the tension. Maybe Scott wanted to really go for it and Marvel, somewhat understandably, didn't want a true horror movie that would make parents and kids think twice about seeing it? Feige did recently say that it wouldn't be a horror movie, contradicting early comments by Scott and others. Maybe they agreed on things earlier, but once they saw the script they thought it went too far. I like the idea of an MCU movie with horror elements but I wouldn't want it to be a full-on horror movie. Same way I like humor in an MCU movie but I wouldn't want it to be a flat-out comedy. So who knows, you may be right and the MCU made the right choice.

If it is indeed because Marvel didn't want a horror movie then surely they told the director that months if not years ago. It's also possible it has more to do with cramming stuff in to set up future movies. Historically that's what has alienated directors in the MCU. And it's also worth noting that those movies are always among the worst in the MCU: Iron Man 2, Age of Ultron, Thor TDW, Ant Man... It's sad to think that Dr Strange 2 could end up like those.

And you notice these director losses has no impact on release dates. It's so certain how the film is going to be packaged that they can go through 20 directors-it won't change anything.
Used to be common that if a director is gone the film shuts down for months. Not as Disney co.

As opposed to every DCEU film cramming of bunch of stupid, useless, and irrelevant cameos to set up the next DCEU movies.

What's interesting to me is that some MCU movies are allowed to take some serious risks. Black Panther's social themes almost certainly made Dizney execs nervous. Infinty War kills half the characters (temporarily, but still a bold move), and Civil War has Tony and Steve beating the crap out of each other. All of these bold moves paid off. I don't understand why Marvel doesn't commit to that approach. It's not like letting a director have freedom has ever back fired on them. Meanwhile, trying to control directors certainly has back fired numerous times...

Man, this board really is dying. Time was a topic like this would've easily gone for ten pages. Where did everyone go?

Thing is it might not be, remember the news of D&D leaving the SW project after their Netflix deal and almost immediately after they put their collective foot in their mouths at a convention? they had left the project months earlier, Disney just wanted to hold off on the announcement as to not fan the flames of KK being difficult to work with and making coices based on who was "hot" without taking anything else into account, this choice could have been made months ago and they just wanted to hold off on announcing it.
Also remember Wonder Woman? Michelle MacLaren left the film officially in March 2015, Jenkins was signed on in less than a month, and the movie went into filming less than 7 months later, and that's without a lot of the performers signed on yet, Dr Strange has a leg up as it has many key performers already signed up, set built and stuff, meaning there is a little less of a time crunch in theory.
Now could still turn to shit but for all we know Disney has someone lined up and signed and they just wont announce it for a few weeks.

They have a history of success. We aren't talking about WB and the DCEU, or Fox and the X-Men. The movie will come out on time and be a huge hit and well liked.
