I remember the advertising campaign for Point Break in 1991.
‘The ex-Presidents are SURFERS!’
The commercials were on all of the time. I thought the movie must have made huge money. I looked it up and it wasn’t that much.
I had no interest in seeing the film as a kid and finally saw it today. It was very stupid. A couple of good action scenes and was nicely adult as action films were back then but it was ludicrous and really dumb.

 Batman (1989) The Taco Bell promotion was just the tip of the iceberg. I think they must have sold a bazillion t-shirts and posters of the batman emblem on black before the movie came out. The Six Flags theme parks all had tie in rides as well. I can't remember any other film up to that point in time with a bigger advertising campaign.

Godzilla ('98) had a massive advertising campaign (from what I recall). And the hype for that film was unreal. Too bad it ended up being a let down.
