-FORD V FERRARI?! I thought it was out of the Best Picture race! What a nice surprise! I also felt doubts about JOKER, since it hadn't gotten that many nominations in this category throughout the season. I remember THE FAREWELL and KNIVES OUT being considered long shots, so I'm not surprised they're not nominated, but I thought they were better than some of the actual nominees. -Best Directing was very competitive and the choices were never going to satisfy everyone. I personally felt Greta Gerwig did a better job than Martin, Todd and Quentin, but they're not bad choices. And no, don't make this a sexism issue. -Saoirse! Awesome! I feared that she might have lost a little steam recently. I haven't seen HARRIET, but I thought Lupita Nyong'o had more chances than Cynthia based on how many awards she's been winning. I personally thought Awkwafina was more deserving than Scarlett, but not a bad choice. -Best Actor was the most competitive category of the entire year. There were arguably 10 frontrunners. The choices were also never going to satisfy everyone. Am I satisfied? Yes. -The writing nominations are all good choices, though I'm surprised 1917 made it over THE FAREWELL. -I like the Best Song line-up. Not just because they're good songs, but also because THE LION KING isn't nominated here. -Yes! I love I LOST MY BODY! Wow, no FROZEN PART II here. I thought it was better than HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON PART 3. Even KLAUS (which I liked) is a surprise. -I haven't seen MALEFICENT PART 2 yet, but I assumed that ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD and especially ROCKETMAN were locks for Makeup/Hairstyling. Hell, even DOLEMITE IS MY NAME had bigger chances. -Wow! I assumed THE LIGHTHOUSE had lost its chances of a nomination. I wasn't a big fan of THE IRISHMAN's cinematography. I would've nominated LITTLE WOMEN or PARASITE instead. -I haven't seen 1917, but I know that they make it look like it's one shot. Does that mean it deserved a Best Editing nomination? Either way, I'm happy with these choices. -Yes! PARASITE for Production Design! I loved LITTLE WOMEN, but it's not fair for period pieces to always get nominated here. I assumed JOKER could get a chance here. -I thought ATLANTICS was a lock for a nomination, even though I personally wasn't a big fan of it. APOLLO 11 isn't nominated?! I didn't see any documentary last year, but I thought this one was the frontrunner to win! -I can't say I'm surprised Willem Dafoe and Song Kang-ho aren't nominated. Again, the competition was too strong this year. -Yes! THE NEIGHBORS' WINDOW was one of my favorite shorts last year! -JOKER and LITTLE WOMEN for Score! Yay! THE RISE OF SKYWALKER? But the score was mostly re-using the old themes (even more than EPISODES VII & VIII). I thought US had a bigger chance here. -I'm surpised JOKER is nominated for the Sound awards but AVENGERS PART 4 isn't. -Good choices for Supporting Actress, though I'm surprised to see Kathy Bates instead of Jennifer Lopez and Zhao Shuzhen.

Glad that Joker is doing so well. Didn't expect them to nominate Parasite for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film (that's a mouthful they really had to change it?). I'm surprised that Uncut Gems didn't get any nominations after all the hullabaloo. Very surprised that Jennifer Lopez or Hustlers in general didn't score anything. Good to see Cynthia Erivo earn some attention as Tubman, but I could had sworn Lupita Nyong'o might had been nominated for US.

Sad to see Uncut Gems getting no love from the Academy.

My guess is the Academy is holding a grudge against Sandler for years of bad movies. And frankly, he doesn't not deserve it. Dude's made a billion shit ass movies. You don't get an award for killing it in one or two lol. Just kidding. I was pulling for him.
I like Driver. I like Hanks. I like Pugh. I'll be happy if any of them win.

My guess is the Academy is holding a grudge against Sandler for years of bad movies. Yes, because everyone who has won an Oscar has had a perfect track record. š

Second, to say Sandler has had an imperfect track record would be quite the understatement.

Sad to see Uncut Gems getting no love from the Academy. my sentiment exactly but they simply had a small campaign and somewhat late in the season. but thet were my nr1 of rhe entire 2019 in every aspect. and i think they do hold a grudge and thats stupid you should only evaluate it based on That One Performance in that One movie. Eituer way he is great everywhere just sometines has much worse scripts/directing.

I'm really happy with this year's nominations.
But I noticed that Best Supporting Actor category is really weird this year. This is usually the category for the hard-working, actor's actor who is well-respected by his peers. I'm thinking of the Chris Coopers and Sam Rockwells and Mahershala Alis. But this year we have 4 A-listers alongside Pesci and 4 of the 5 nominees are already previous winners.

As I reiterated somewhere the ranking for who wins in likelihood feels like: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 1917 Joker Parasite The Irishman the rest: Jojo Rabbit Marriage Story Little Women Ford vs. Ferrari.

Well, it's called "Best Actor (Who Happens to Be) in a Supporting Role;" not "Best Character Actor."

the rest just seem stuffy to me when they could have gone with more dynamic, interesting and less pretentious\arty performances. Pryce and Banderas are really only nominated for show DiCaprio didn't do anything overtly exceptional, apart from coming across as a spoiled jerk-off and doing it well. Christian Bale - Ford vs Ferrari Joel Egerton - Rocketman I haven't seen Parasite, but Kang-ho Song seems like a good bet by all accounts that I have read. 1) So Joaquin's performance (which was great) wasn't pretentious or artsy? With him painting his tongue and dancing in his underwear? 2) What does that even mean? 3) Christian's Ken Miles wasn't a jerk? 4) *Taron 5) He would've been nominated as supporting, though.

What's wrong with nominating Netflix films?

Phoenix was playing a mentally ill clown. There was nothing pretentious about what he did here by painting his tongue. Even if it could be considered pretentious, was there much else that he did that was?
The image conscious Academy like to throw a bone out to foreign films that not many really see, or care about, and give a nod to films that make them feel virtuous.
Bale is a jerk himself, but his performance of playing a real life character came across as so very believable to me and when I saw the picture of Ken at the end, I just completely understood his character. Being English myself and the genius of Miles with cars and his extraordinary life, I just thought it was one of the best biopic performances I have seen and I don't even care for that milieu of car racing. Yes, Damon could have been considered support, just like Pitt. But both could have also been considered co-lead as well. The Academy often does category fraud, if it wants to find a slot. 1) I suppose making faces to the mirror could count. 2) If that was the case, why not nominate foreign actors every year? And in all 4 categories? By the way, Antonio's performance was arguably better than a lot of the other nominees, so I don't see how this would be throwing a bone. And how does Jonathan fit in here? 3) You didn't really answer my question, though. 4) I was talking about Kang-ho Song. Matt's character was definitely lead, arguably more than Christian's.
