1917 was brilliant! A great movie, beautifully staged and beautifully shot. I highly recommend it.
However, its been touted for its technical achievement of having been done in one shot. It is not one shot. There are edits in there. They are very clever. In some cases they are in camera. In others hidden by FX.
The movie is shot in very long takes though and is amazing.

Of course it's not actually done in one shot that would be (nearly) impossible, but it has the illusion of being done in one shot (even though as you said you can easily notice the cuts if you're specifically looking for them, but they're still very well done). It's kinda similar in that sense to Birdman, which was also 'done in one shot'. But yeah, either way, great movie.

It doesn't even keep the illusion of a single shot. After all the reviews and marketing talking up the single shot illusion, there is a point in the movie where the screen goes black, this breaking the illusion.

Hitchcock pioneered this technique in Rope. And an episode of The Haunting of Hill House was one-take. It can be diverting if the action isn’t fast-paced as the audience starts watching for the hidden cuts. I’m looking forward to seeing this.

The only one-shot movie I know to be actually one shot in Russian Ark. This, Rope, and Birdman obviously cheat it, and I don't think it's a secret.

who could even reasonably assume that this is shot in one take…?
Anyway, this is this year's most likely winner as BP.

It’s a fine film but it’s very clearly not one shot. Other than the obvious jump in time at the mid-point, there’s all that moving through doors etc to ‘disguise’ the cuts.

Anyone interested in the art of one shot takes should watch the opening to Touch of Evil and enjoy Orson Welles' legendary one shot sequence.

Birdman was not touted as a one shot. But yes, this is like Birdman in that it has very long takes with very smart choreography of both action and camera work, and clever edits.
Still, it is a brilliant movie, and Deakins will win the Oscar for cinematography again. Or at least he should.
And its not impossible to do... see The Russian Ark. Its a foreign film but it can be found on DVD. That one IS a one shot movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but I have heard of The Russian Ark, that's also why I put nearly between brackets. As far as I know that's the only well known feature length movie to be done in one shot. Would you (or anyone else) happen to know any other true one shot movies? I'd be very interested to watch them and to see how they handled it in terms of the limitations that you have when you really have to do everything without cuts without ever messing up. And concerning the other thing, all I heard from people before watching the movie is that it's shot to look like it's done in one continuous shot. But I could image how as the hype grows and more people want to watch it the exact details get a bit lost and you'll find people saying it's actually done in only one shot.

Well, to be sure, Russian Ark had all the effect of a sleeping pill. So I wouldn't necessarily RUN to go find it, unless you really do want to marvel at the technique of it. It was beautiful to look at.
As for whether or not it can be done... I would imagine that if you choreographed and rehearsed the shit out of it, and you had a limited time story with a limited location, it could be done. At first that's what I thought this was.
Regardless its amazing filmmaking.
edit: Apparently IMDB lists 33 movies that are ONE shot:

I like the surreal impression it gives of real time within the one tracking shot technique. The impression of over a day\night\day in one take that takes 2 hours was skillfully and brilliantly achieved.

After all the reviews and marketing talking up the single shot illusion, there is a point in the movie where the screen goes black, this breaking the illusion. It really had no choice here, because by that time, it had to segue into night and used the characters own blackout to push the narrative forward and to become born into day again. It would have been one over long boring movie otherwise.

I've always heard it was shot to make it look it was made in one shot. Not it was actually made in one shot.
