Was it just due to geography? You just chose to become a fan of the nearest team? Or was there another reason?
My favorite teams:
Dallas Cowboys - I became a fan in 1978. Super Bowl XII (Dallas vs Denver) was the 1st NFL game I ever watched. The Cowboys were America's Team so naturally I rooted for America's Team.
San Francisco Giants - I became a fan in the late 1970s. The San Francisco Chronicle used to give out Giants' Top Student tickets to any students in grades K-12 who had a GPA of 3.5 or better so I got tickets every year. The games were always for weekday night games (and never against the Dodgers), but I did go to a few of those games.
Villanova basketball - I became a fan in early 1985. I was a senior in high school and had been accepted to Cal-Berkeley. The girl that I was going to the prom with had been accepted to Villanova. In March, we watched Villanova's NCAA Tournament games together and celebrated as Villanova made their incredible run to the national championship.
The Mega-Powers - October 1987. The Mania and the Madness joined forces on Saturday Night's Main Event.

I went to school there. Then, in 2020, I jinxed them by rooting for Clemson in football, not realizing my powers could bleed through to basketball. I know, I'm an idiot.

I was born and raised in Rhode Island, so the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins were all just natural. The Patriots of the 70's were a pretty weak team, plus they played on artificial turf back then, which I found icky. I figured to root for a football team as far away from where I was as possible, so I picked the Chargers. Plus, I loved the uniforms and the style of Dan Fouts and Air Coryell.
In college sports, I stayed true to my roots and rooted for either Providence or URI, mainly the Friars. I had family that lived in Alabama who were huge Tide fans, and let's face it, in the Bear Bryant days, they were the elite of college football. That may be my "bandwagon" team, but rooting for Bama is fun.
I've lived here in the Bay Area for many years and I've become a big San Francisco Giants fan. I have friends here who believe I'm more of a Giants fan than a Red Sox fan, but that's not really true. The only other Bay Area team I root for is Stanford. I remember when Stanford barely beat Rhode Island in a classic NCAA tournament game, that was a hard one for me.

It's a shame that Macho Man's insecurity and jealousy tore apart his friendship between him and Hulk - and soon the Mega Powers were no more - until WCW where they'd team up up 6 million more times only to split up again 6,000,001 more times.

For me it was due to family and home teams: Mets - My family is divided equally Mets/Yankees so I could have easily joined the dark side but My uncle took me to a Mets game when I was 10 and my grandpa was the biggest Baseball fan in the family so they won Giants - I din't start following football until later so I just picked the blue one lol Knicks - Loved the 90s era with Ewing so i stuck with them. Rangers - Not the biggest Hockey fan but I had to pick a home team and they are also blue my fav color.

Leeds United: Started in 1996 i have no idea why, stopped supporting them in 2019 as i am just sick of them always disappointing me. the only good season where really the years under David O`Leary between 1997 and 2002 when they where in the top 5 ever year, after that it has pretty much just been disappointment after disappointment. And when they lost to Derby in the last game in the play of semi-final that was the final straw. And looking at them this year it seems like they are doing the same thing this year, 1 win in the last 6 games.
I don`t support any team anymore.

I've always found this rather fascinating - i.e. fans with multiple sports teams in their respective city. Do you root against the Yankees, Jets, Nets and Islanders? Despise them and want to rip their fans hearts out? Still root on but they're not your favorite in the city? If we had multiple sports teams down here in Philly - I'd be in heaven and cheer them all on. You'd think (at least I'd think) during the Mets/Yanks WS - the whole city would be proud puffing their chest out - yes - rooting for your team - however take pride in the fact that your city is representing both league/conference champions. Or does it not work like that with cities with multiple teams?

Do you root against the Yankees, Jets, Nets and Islanders? -I Hate the Yankees , The Jets are like a redheaded stepchild they are there but that's about it, I don't like the Nets but I don't actively root against them and the Islanders are really a Long Island team so unless you are really into Hockey they get very little attention in the rest of the NY area. Despise them and want to rip their fans hearts out? Still root on but they're not your favorite in the city? -Yankee fans are annoyingly arrogant (those in My family included) they end all are arguments with 27 if you know what i mean. I could never root for them as for the others I only pay attention to my teams but I would not mind any of them doing well. You'd think (at least I'd think) during the Mets/Yanks WS - the whole city would be proud puffing their chest out - yes - rooting for your team - however take pride in the fact that your city is representing both league/conference champions. -The 2000 world series was crazy fun in NY until game 2 and then it was pretty much over and I think there are a lot of casual sport fans specially in a huge diverse place like NY that take pride in the city doing well

Kudos. Credit when credit is due. This is an interesting and fun topic. I think i speak for everyone when i say you would be much more liked if there were more threads like these and much less of your usual nonsense.
Devils and Nets I became a fan of because they were the only two New Jersey teams. Also, my father was a big Devils fan and we had season tickets for several years and I later retained them for several years into adulthood.
Yankees because my uncle was a huge Yankees and baseball fan. His son, my cousin, didn't give a fiddlers fuck about sports, so he would take me to games, watch games with me, tell me stories about seeing Mickey Mantle as a kid and the Yankees of the 70's. So I became a fan. As a young boy in the mid and late 90's I also heavily rooted for the Mariners. this was purely because I loved Ken Griffey Jr. By far my favorite non Yankees player of all time and one of my top 3-5 favorite players ever. That faded when he left, but never completely. To this day I check out the M's and their stats on baseball reference and always check out how their doing in the standings and hope they do well. But I'm a Yankees fan
Cowboys was a very sweet and stupid childlike reason. Even though he was gone already, I found out about Tom Landry. And my grandpa looks A LOT like Tom Landry. My grandpa was and still is my favorite family member. So i rooted for the team that used to employ the guy who looked like my Grandpa. That's the gods honest reason. I watched Super Bowls 27 and 28 but at that point wasn't as into it as i would be. I was 7 and 8. I was happy when they won, but I half paid attention. You know how kids are, i was 7 and 8. But by the time Super Bowl 30 came around i was a full blown fan who was more knowledgeable than most 10 year olds. My parents went to watch the game at my uncles house but I didn't want the distractions of all those people, so I stayed home and watched the whole thing by myself. i remember it so well. And we had one of those mid 90's illegal cable boxes, so that meant Spice channel! God, during the commercial breaks and halftime I must have rubbed out close to 10 ghost loads. Those were the days, eh fellas? Where you could jerk off and nothing came out but it still felt great? Now you need tissues and you need to aim and then every so often you're cleaning the fucking ceiling thinking "how the fuck did it end up way up there 3 feet to my left when i was pointing it right? What is this sorcery?" And then there's the onesn where it shoots out quicker than expected and just makes a mess everywhere. And you're cleaning it thinking you really should take a long hard look at your life. Those pre-jizz days were just so much simpler, more innocent. Am i right fellas?
What were we talking about again???

That's too bad, because as a Yankees "fan," you completely missed out on one of the greatest dynasties in not just Yankees history, but sports history in general. So I guess you're a bandwagon Yankees fan, huh???

Pretty simple for me. The Mets and Islanders played their home games within a 20 minute drive from my house growing up, so my dad always took me to those games, probably 10 Isles game per year, and about 15-20 Met games per year.
As for the Giants, I guess my family were all Giants fans, except my Mom who was and is inexplicably a Jets fan. But I haven't watched football for a few years now.
Never liked basketball, ever, and never will.

That's too bad, because as a Yankees "fan," you completely missed out on one of the greatest dynasties in not just Yankees history, but sports history in general. So I guess you're a bandwagon Yankees fan, huh??? Alright, so you're clearly fucking retarded and illiterate. And if that sounds redundant, it isn't, I've seen retarded people who are literate to varying degrees. But that's good to know. You know, sometimes it takes a while for someone to show their true colors. You can't quite figure out what their deal is. But not. You come out swinging right out of the gate and let everyone know you're a fucking moron. You dropped some hints in that stupid fucking Gary Sheffield thread. I mean, what the fuck was that even? You ask where he ranks among your favorite Yankees and then the poll question is the deep and thought provoking "Do you like him?" Seriously? Oh, actually, it said "Do you like him as a BASEBALL PLAYER?" Uhh, as opposed to what, a fucking haberdasher? And how weird and random is that? Where does he rank among peoples favorite Yankees? Fucking nowhere. Of all the titles and all the greats and fan favorites that have played for this storied franchise, from Gehrig to Judge and everyone in between, you really think there's folks out there with Gary Sheffield and his two title-less seasons in their top 5 list of Yankee greats? But I played along and participated and gave an honest answer, despite the obvious stupidity. Why? Because I'm a swell guy. Hell, if the thread is harmless and doesn't seem malicious, I give everyone a chance, even if they come of a bit on the simpleton side. No need to start unecessary fights after all, be friendly to the new folks, amirite? I'm a standup guy, after all And how do i get rewarded for my kindness? This fucking dumb assery. Let me try to take you through this like you're a child( My apologies to any children reading this for the comparison) I didn't miss out on shit, fuck stick. As I said, I'm a Yankee fan. I said it twice. I was in the stands for a handful of those playoff games rooting for the Yankees, including two memorable ones against the Mariners( and the Doc Gooden No Hitter against the M's too) At no point did I say i wasn't a Yankee fan or that I was a Mariners fan. At no point did I slightly even allude to it( Dumb Fuck Assistance: Allude means "hint at" or "suggest") I was simply sharing a little anecdote about the fact that as a child i really liked Ken Griffey, and as a result I liked the Mariners. Nowhere did I say i was a M's fan or not a Yankee fan. This is what people do. They have their favorite team, that they root for always, through good times and bad. But over the course of a fans lifetime, every fans, they will come across a player or players or team or teams that they enjoy watching for whatever reason and like to see them succeed. This doesn't make them a fan of that team or not a fan of their actual team, you stupid, simple, extra chromosome having mother fucker you! And think( I know that's tough for you) about what you said. Evidently your pea sized brain made you arrive at the conclusion that I WASN'T a fan of the Yankees during their dynasty, and then was afterwards. Yet you called me a bandwagon fan. How the fuck does that even make sense? So I don't like them when they're winning and then do like them when they're not winning...and I'm a bandwagon fan!? What the actual fuck? That's not how that works. You could have just spent a few seconds thinking that over and realized it makes no sense. Or maybe not, maybe I'm giving you too much credit. Maybe you did read it back, think it over, and thought to yourself "Nailed it! Totally PWND that guy, bruh!" Jesus, I can't ever imagine being that dumb. You made that costly mistake Sean Penn made in I Am Sam. NEVER go FULL retard. But listen, despite everything, I'm rooting for ya. I am. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't lead a normal life and that there's no place for you in this world. There is. We'll set you up with a helmet, some pads, a pair of headphones and off you go. Enjoy Life! And I haven't seen it yet, but i promise...we'll find your baseball, Warren!

Local for the most part. Red Sox fan because most of my friends were Yankee fans. My quasi-Duke relationship came from the family connection to Christian Laettner.
