By adding such things as "Super Bowl halftime shows".
No doubt, American football is a great game of strategy, skills, mind game and athleticism but why lower it by adding things like Super Bowl halftime shows? To most of the people outside of the US, it feels extremely cartoonish and childish when they mix sports with entertainment. Watching Sports can be extremely thrilling experience and finals of a tournament can get intense. I find it stupid that they break the intensity of sports by adding entertainment artists performances during the game. Same with NBA facilitating army people during the game. Don't mix other things with sports.

I agree that the halftime show is tolerable at best. The worst part about it is the crowd of “fans” that parade onto the field and dance bizarrely around the stage. None of them look like they’ve ever seen a football game before.

Super Bowl over here is an extravaganza - not just a game.
Parties are centered around it - the casual fan is a viewer all over the country - even if you don't like football.
It's a giant party/entertainment/football game wrapped in one - hence the halftime show.
I always thought instead of a musical act they should experiment with something like a Conor McGregor fight - I think it would be a hit - but that's just me.

Okay, may be it developed that way and seems pretty normal to the people who have grown up watching it. I just came to know from wikipedia that half time performances are features of football at levels of competition. I personally like American sports a lot except for these halftime shows and the all-star games which seem to be horrible events.

Don't mix other things with sports. It is an attempt to justify charging 7 figures for 30 second commercial during half time of the Super Bowl. If a company paid 5.25 million for a 30 second spot and the NFL ran it during half time, the client would scream bloody murder if it were a normal half time. By having an extravagant half time show, the NFL can keep more eyes on the tv and then justify keeping the same rates.

Dana could, easily, on another channel/service. Even if it was pre-taped for time, in secret to withhold its outcome. Instead there's been dabbles of nothing but bikini & puppy 'bowls'. I guess opposing networks don't want to latch on to the SB airing, lest all those viewers go to the game afterwards.

I think it's a sharp business model also for both Pepsi (or whomever) & musicians alike - whom I believe are paid zero dollars to perform, & yet see the financial bounce from that 'free' billion eyeball audience. The real tarnish is how many & how long each in-game commercial breaks are. When your fav team is not playing, the game can feel like an eternity.

What I'm saying is - Dana White and the NFL should partner up and have a match during halftime. You roll a ring out at midfield as opposed to having Brittney Spears out there singing. Money to be made for both parties - and you put a fighter like McGregor in there - I'm sure casual fans of MMA and the NFL would stay tuned in - how often do you get to see Conor McGregor for free? Never. It would be a giant event and I'd bet rating would be through the roof - especially if you make it a circus - like you put Floyd Mayweather in there with him - that right there is a giant money maker - the potential of watching Money quit/tap out/get his a$$ kicked - Money is a businessman - if the money was right - he'd do it - all parties would win.

I know you've said that in the past, but I think you'd acknowledge that it doesn't make sense for either party involved. However, I'd prefer something that's not just some pop star. So I'm with you there.

I don't like torturing people, but this afternoon, I'll post some videos of AFL Grand Final"entertainment" that truly tarnishes a game. From Angry Anderson on the bat mobile to Meatloaf, we have the NFL covered for shite.

From Angry Anderson on the bat mobile to Meatloaf, we have the NFL covered for shite. For years it was like a race to the bottom of the barrel between the AFL and NSWRL/ARL/NRL for shit entertainment. Twice they had an act come out, do nothing, and walk back off because of power issues. TWICE. That being said, nothing tops Meatloaf. Nothing.

Attempts to appeal to wider audiences. A lot of casual viewers couldnt care less about the game itself but watch for commercials, halftime shows, and all the other hoopalah surrounding the event.

Making perfect use of the roof of Houston's Reliant Stadium for her entrance, Lady Gaga's halftime show was the last one I liked.

It's image is already tarnished by its players committing domestic violence and receiving a slap on the wrist as punishment.

Mmmm, yes, well, not every sport can have an image and a history as "untarnished" as cricket's. Ooo, and blood sports, you say? Sound like a classy lot, they. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricket

Just like Shady Brady tarnished it, with all of his cheating.
