With the recent Crisis CW crossover episodes that include Brandon Routh donning the Superman suit, I decided to watch Superman Returns again and I have to say it still holds up so well for me. I still think Routh is second only to Reeve in the dual role. I think there are several magnificent moments in this film, my favorite being the airplane rescue. I like Kate Bosworth, though I know many didn't. I love Kevin Spacey, I do not think they could have cast anyone better. I love the look of the film with the exception of the interior of The Daily Planet. The retread of the real estate plot involving the kryptonite island is poorly conceived as a vehicle with the goal of seeing Superman lifting the island of kryptonite, doing the impossible, which is a truly spectacular scene.
There are pacing issues in the second half. I would have left a few scenes here and there out. I was surprised how affected I was again seeing Superman getting such a beatdown by Luthor's goons.
I remember at the time people being upset that Superman was eavesdropping on Lois at her home. Never bothered me. And then there was the assertion he was a 'deadbeat dad', which I kinda laugh about now.
It is most of all an homage to Donner's Superman the Movie and that, to me, is not a bad thing at all. Especially with how Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Justice League turned out, I appreciate Superman Returns even more.
8/10

Low 8 or high 7. Interestingly, it was well recieved when it came out, but for some reason people turned on it.

6.5/10 (voted 7 in the poll)
I agree that Routh and Spacey were great in their roles. Just wish the movie was paced better or just trimmed down on the runtime.

5/10. Used to strongly dislike it. I hate Routh and Bosworth’s casting but Kevin Spacey was perfect for Lex Luthor. The airplane rescue is the best scene in the movie. It’s too long and the leads’ chemistry is lackluster.

I haven't watched it in 10 years, but it fell kinda flat for me. Like it wasn't worth doing another movie for that. 6/10

Superman Returns is a worthy sequel to the original Chris Reeves movie and Brandon Routh is a better, more charismatic Supes than Henry Cavill. 7/10

Thought it started good, but bogged down as it went along.

I thought it was a good "Back On Track" movie for the franchise, and I believe an action packed "Superman Returns 2" film would have been fantastic... But sadly, we never got a chance to see what that film might have been... Instead, we got the Henry Cavill DCEU films, which have disappointed many long-time Superman fans who expected more fun and hope from their beloved hero, who was never meant to have an obvious dark side like Batman does.
