Two fun facts about the original Hammering Hank
1. He almost signed with the Yankees. Yankees uber scout Paul Krichell had him lined up in 1928, telling him the Yanks current 1b would be washed up in two years or so. Greenberg might have languished in the minors for years, watching Gehrig
2. He was nearly the owner of the Los Angeles Angels. Hank had put up the group to own the AL's expansion club in LA but he included Bill Veeck. The owners hated Veeck and blocked Greenberg's ownership.

If those guys are first balloters how in the world would Palmiero not be? Straight up statically (if you didn't know about steroids) his stats are the defintion of a first ballot HOFer. Same with McGwire.

Same with McGwire. the eye test my friend. i don't know one thing about his stats - this guy right here ain't a stat guy. he did nothing exceptionally special that stood out to me and was vanilla - was 'steady'. on the other hand one can argue the other 4 changed the game - the rocket was one of the greatest pitchers ever and the Bonds, McGwire/Sosa homer bonanza will go down in baseball lore palmeiro = mo cheeks palmeiro = ed belfour palmeiro = philip rivers

That probably has to be a Jewish thing. Probably. George Moriarty was the umpire in the 1935 World Series who cleared the Cubs bench because they wouldn't stop yelling racist comments at Greenberg and after the game, Moriarty was fined by that piece of shit, Judge Landis.
Greenberg put up with a lot of crap in his heyday.

There's a great documentary on him from the 90s, I highly recommend.
