Just watched this...
A comedy homage to 80s wilderness slasher films like Friday 13th, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, etc.
Played for laughs, everything is over the top. Every cliche is covered.
Quite an enjoyable romp. Much better than I expected.
Tony Todd's cameo piece was the highlight for me 👍
7/10

Love the gore in that one.

A nice and knowing tribute to old school slasher flicks with some very creative kills. But a rather abrupt ending, though.

I didn't mind it, but I found it a bit too brightly lit and taking something away from the atmosphere of it. I kind of agree. I don't know if I attribute that to it just being a cheap and amateurish production by an inexperienced director and DP or if I give them a little credit for trying to style it like a comedy. Either way, the atmosphere could have used some darkness and murkiness, and I think shooting it like a stylized horror film would have made the jokes work better too.

Similar to Feast (2005) in that it's best if you watch all the sequels immediately after, since they pick right up where the last one left off.

I can't speak for Feast, since I haven't seen any of those, but I would proceed with caution with the Hatchet sequels. Maybe forget about watching the newest one altogether.

Victor Crowley a.k.a Hatchet IV is the weakest link in this series, but not so bad to be completely avoided...maybe.

I watched Hatchet for October Challenge. I think I was the only person in the world to not know it was a parody/comedy before viewing.
Overall I thought it was ok but not really planning on going out of why way for sequels.

This movie always annoyed me somehow. Can't explain it. Just feels like it's constantly winking at me, instead of telling an actual story or trying to actually be entertaining on its own merits, and not by throwing well-worn tropes in our faces and dialing them up to 11. Felt the same way about Behind the Mask, Wrong Turn 2 etc.
I get why folks like those films, but I am personally glad to see that era of horror in the rearview.

Yeah, some of those movies felt like the people behind them saying "look how shitty our movie is, but it's okay because we know it's shitty" without really making any kind of statement or bringing anything new the table, or even going full-on parody. Although I liked Behind the Mask. How do you feel about Scream?

The post-Scream meta-commentary self-referential slasher thing was totally overdone for sure, and I can see where this one would be annoying. It is winking at you, and it is dialing it up over the top more than it is concerned with making its story actually work. But I do think The Hatchet movies (at least the first... maybe second too) did that sort of comedy a little better than the myriad others that tried. But I actually quite liked Behind the Mask. I don't think it falls into the same category. It's not totally over the top in its comedy and it actually takes a novel approach to the slasher pesudo-parody. And to your point, when it drops the verite/mockumentary thing it mostly plays it straight and aims for something of a compelling story instead of the parody... while still functioning as a parody or satire on the genre. That came at a time when I'd seen way too many slasher comedies, and I was impressed that they'd found a new angle and done it well.

Although I liked Behind the Mask. How do you feel about Scream? I like/love Scream, though I didn't particularly love the self-aware era of horror it ushered in. Few could do it as well as Williamson/Craven, so for me, it got old/annoying after a while. I like humor mixed with my humor, but some of these films (Hatchet especially) were just trying so hard but did not work for me. At all. Not trying to be condescending, and I don't want to shit on things other people enjoy. Like I said, I get the fanbase for those films, but they're definitely not to my taste.
