I'm sure this thread's extensive traffic is going to break the internet I recorded the Danny Garcia (Philly - former welterweight champ) fight last night on Showtime and am watching it now - listening to Al Bernstein is always a pleasure We've got a big one in Feb coming up - Wilder vs. Fury

Fury vs. Wilder Saturday Night Who ya got? Fury is an enigma to me - that being said - I'm going to Fury in a split decision. He's predicted he's going to knock out the knock out artist in 2 rounds.

No interest. Not really a sport professional boxing. It's like wrassling now. Just staged pay per view pocket dipping of the gullible.

Did you see Fury get up in Round 12 of their first fight?
That's when I gained a little bit of respect for him as a fighter -

That's about all I saw of the fight.

I still have trouble taking the HW seriously after Andy Ruiz. OK, he;s a much, much better boxer than his body shape. But still. Imagine what Frazier, Ali, Tyson, Lewis pre grill Foreman would have done with him. If they could have stopped laughing, they would have pummeled him with one hand. The bigger shame is Anthony Joshua.

Might have to illegally stream this Wilder vs Fury fight considering all the brouhaha going on over it. Fury weighed in at 276 - the 3rd heaviest of his career.
I picked him in a split decision - curious if he's got the stamina - but their other fight went the distance so who knows- he just looks so out of shape all the time as opposed to Wilder who always looks like a cut beast.
Fury said he's looking for a knockout and plans to knock him out in 2.
I'm hoping this is all talk and he actually 'boxes' and it's a chess match - if it is and stays away from Wilders right - and it goes the distance - I think he takes a decision.

One things for sure, the is the first boxing match anyone really given a shit about in a long time. Since Mayweather. Might be good for the sport if it isn't a snoozefest

Even the middleweight, welterweight divisions are lacking intrigue.
I miss the days of B-Hop, De La Hoya, Trinidad, Mosley, Margarito, Mayorga, Cotto, Vargas
Even before that - Paz, Camacho, Angel Manfredy - seemed like there was always some entertaining fights going on in all weight classes in the 90s

I remember the days of the "4 Kings". Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Duran (although I thought Duran was vastly overrated). The Marvelous one was my favorite fighter of all time. The Hit Man was a terrifying individual, Sugar Ray was the Golden Boy (the refs and judges sure thought so) and Duran was, well, some liked him. Some of the greatest fights in history. Hagler- Hearns (greatest fight ever), Duran-Leonard I (I'll give him that) Hagler-Leonard (robbed!), both Hearns-Leonard fights. There was also Iran Barkley and Wilfred Benitez (much better than Duran).

I remember Barkley.
I was just watching James Toney fights and watched his fight vs. Barkley
I don't think Toney gets talked about enough - I thought it was impressive he went all the way up in his career from middleweight to heavyweight
Sure he had 10 losses - but 77 wins - watched him beat Holyfield too (I know Holyfield was an aging fighter)

A lot of great boxer racked up losses in their careers, fighting for paychecks.
John "the Beast" Mugabi was another good MW. He beat Hagler pretty good for a while but the Marvelous One ended up dropping him. Hagler said it was the toughest fight of his career, not Hearns or Leonard. That's a bold statement.

I'll never forget Tyson's last loss.
It was quite sad - he pretty much stated that - he was fighting to pay his bills.

I never liked Tyson when he fought. Yes he was a devastating puncher but he got his career by opening up tomato cans. Overrated morons like Marvis Frazier who thought it was a good idea to stand toe to to with Tyson. Douglas used his reach, exposed the fatal defect in Iron Mike (short arms) and beat him. But he was good for boxing and I wish he had a better career. Ray Leonard was the only fighter I hated worse. I respected Sugar Ray but he got so many gift decisions. Hagler beat him and lost (one judge scored it 10-2!). Hearns thumped him and it was a draw (even Ray said he was beaten).
Boxing need this to be an epic fight. Another Ali-Frazier I or Hagler-Hearns. If it's a clinch fest, a Mayweather-esque points show or a poor decision, its can set boxing back, maybe forever

I get that - that his first 20 or so fights were against tomato cans
But after winning the belt against Berbick (I'm reading his first career list off of Wiki now) - 'Bonecrusher' Smith, Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, Larry Holmes (yes I know on the downside of his career like some of these guy), Tony Tubbs, Spinks, Bruno, Carl 'The Truth' Williams were respectable above average heavyweights, no? These were his fights after winning the title vs. Berbick and before he dropped it to Douglas.
I always thought his fights with Ruddock were entertaining as hell
The Holyfield fights IMO came 5 years too late - I'd love to see what would have happened if it was before Mike went to prison
After the last Holyfield fight it was pretty much over for him - but loved when he beat up the bully Andrew Golota and Golota actually quit and got trash thrown at him on his way out of the ring.
He's one of my favorite athletes because I find his story incredibly fascinating - he's a polarizing figure

I depends on that you think of Bonecrusher Smith, Pinklon Thomas et al. Certainly, they weren't Ali's or pre-grill Foreman's (who was?). They were decent fighters but I think Holyfield, Lewis, either Klitschko, hell, maybe Wilder, would have beaten any of those fighters, along with Buster. Not Tyson's fault, you fight who you can. Joe Louis' opponents were the "Bum of the Month Club". He suffered the same lack of quality opponents. Between Max Schmelling and Rocky Marciano, he fought one decent fighter, Billy Cohn. A light HW who nearly beat the Bomber. It doesn't take away from Louis' legacy.
