Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire. Though he naturally played up the comedic element to a greater extent than Hoffman.

I don't say this about many movies but I thought Tootsie was awful. I don't regret watching it but I can live without revisiting it for the rest of my life. Even when Dustin Hoffman revealed himself as a man, I thought it was rushed and anticlimactic. The gimmick wore off quick and no performances took it to the next level.
Maybe awful is a stretch but nothing (for me) rose above the level of "it's fine". It's fine and not a compliment more.

You just jumped from "it's awful" to "it's fine." You just gave new meaning to the word hyperbole.

You just jumped from "it's awful" to "it's fine." You just gave new meaning to the word hyperbole. It's because I didn't want to seem insensitive to people who liked it. I wrestled with putting down "by all means if you like it, don't let me get in the way" but deleted it because I thought it sounded corny. You never know who might take it personally. It's probably better to say I thought it sucked, but more out of personal taste and preference than scrutinizing it on a technical level.
I'm not really sure how else to say it but there's plenty of good movies I don't like because their subject matter or execution doesn't ping my interest. It doesn't have to be terrible for me not to like it, it just has to fail at what it tries to do best. I'd rather watch Street Fighter with JCVD and Raul Julia, which is objectively a much worse film that shoots lower, but it's also a film I much prefer.
Tootsie's fine if you're into that sort of thing. Objectively the movie's fine; thematically I thought it sucked.

That is an interesting way of looking at it. If I say a movie is awful, I mean I think it is awful. That is not saying anything about anyone who likes the movie.

That is an interesting way of looking at it. If I say a movie is awful, I mean I think it is awful. That is not saying anything about anyone who likes the movie. I had to dial it back. It's why I have difficulty grading movies, assigning numbers out of ten. I definitely didn't like Tootsie but when I saw my own word "awful" I thought okay, what else is awful? Movie 43, Crossroads with Britney Spears? I didn't like Tootsie but it's not a catastrophe. I guess I was trying to dial back my own level of emotion because grouping it with films that really are awful didn't seem reasonable.
Maybe there's something to be said for saying a film is awful and meaning it. I balked. I shouldn't have. It's not terrible, I just didn't like it, and I consider those two separate things.

5/10 That is what I would rate a movie based on your description.

From now on just describe your feelings about a movie and I'll tell you what you rate it.

Been awhile since I've seen Tootsie and both actors did a fantastic job but I have to go with Mrs. Doubtfire.

Williams was made up with heavy latex to look like an old woman. Hoffman was just made up with generic make-up that everyday women use to pass as a woman. He had a more difficult task to pass himself of as Dorothy Michaels and make her as believable and organic as possible. Hoffman in Tootsie is far superior than the generic family orientated slapstick of Doubtfire as portrayed by the over-rated Williams.
Those that rate Williams as better, are being dense.

Each to his own Mr. Cat, but I find Tootsie absolutely terrific in ALL departments. In my top 5 comedies of all time.
The performances I find ARE top-notch and in high gear without being heavy-handed. Garr was funny, real and in the moment, Lange won an Oscar for her layered character who learns to empower herself over scuzzball men, Durning had never been better, Murray was cute, Pollack was hilarious and Hoffman just hit the ball right out of the park when he transformed into Dorothy and then had to balance Michael with Dorothy. What a great character she was and she really knew how to pull all the right strings on both male and female characters. Hoffman made her real and believable and no wonder Julie missed her. I miss the film as soon as it ends because I want more.
This film had a rare timing that doesn't appear funny on the surface, but just naturally flowed out of the situations. Nothing about it was forced and it was fresh and original, even if cross-dressing males wasn't anything new in the movies.
