What is interesting is how many plots of earlier movies would have been invalid had cell-phones then existed. Even today, films sometimes use contrived excuses as to why a character cannot do the obvious thing and make a phone-call.

Even today, films sometimes use contrived excuses as to why a character cannot do the obvious thing and make a phone-call. I have noticed how many recent films have been set in the 1970s or '80s. I think it is precisely for this reason.

Haven't seen THE STERILE CUCKOO since it was released, bravo, but, oh did I love it then!! Ever since seeing The Sterile Cuckoo, I've had a soft spot and some sympathy for the often-troubled Liza Minelli.
