Auschwitz was one of dozens of German concentration, work, and death camps. Most of them had dozens of sub-camps. As the Soviet army approached Auschwitz, thousands of inmates were forced to march west to other camps.

My uncle liberated Buchenwald. He wouldn't talk about it for a long time. He said you could smell it from 5 miles away. They were briefed on what to expect but they couldn't believe it until he saw it.

You know how when you smell an overpowering odor, like someone who overdoes perfume, that you can actually know what the perfume would taste like? He could truly believe that he knew what rotting human flesh tasted like. The stench was so overpowering. And the residents of the outlying towns said that they didn't know what was going on there. That's why Patton marched them through the place. There wasn' mcu war left but, for the last few days, they didn't take SS men prisoner.

Wow!!!! 20 years ago, I volunteered in a Jewish nursing home, & some of the patients there were Holocaust survivors.
