Sorry for being jingoistic with this; I absolutely believe a major soccer star would be more newsworthy world wide, but in order to try to keep some limits to the question.
As of right now, early 2020, which American athletes' deaths would get similar coverage in scope in the news as Kobe's got yesterday/today?

I'd say everyone on that list with the following exceptions:
Curry and Mahomes because they haven't been around long enough. It would be a big deal, but not on the level of Kobe. I might be wrong about Curry because he's a multiple champion and he's been a phenom since college. I just don't get the same sense that the general public could pick Steph Curry out of a lineup. Put it this way, my wife knows who Kobe Bryant is. If I asked her who Steph Curry was, she may have heard the name at some point but she probably couldn't tell you he was an athlete, let alone a basketball player.
And Mike Trout. We've talked on this board multiple times about how people outside of baseball have no idea who he is.

I don't really like these type of threads. Trying to undermine someone's passing. Yes, I know you're not doing that and you're referring to the ghoulish media. All death is tragic, especially for the victim's families.

All of them would get huge amounts of attention, but the 4 that would get the most are Jordan, LeBron, Brady and Tiger IMO, given that they’ve been the very best at their sport and are known by everyone, even those who don’t follow sports know who they are.

Most of those names are as big as or bigger than Bryant, worldwide anyway.
Woods and Serena Williams way bigger.

If he has won seven rings... Who on that list has won seven rings? The Goat has won six rings. So this is the benchmark to beat.

Who on that list has won seven rings? The ( not really the ) Goat has ( only ) won six rings. So this is the benchmark to beat. Only one NFL QB has won seven rings That was Otto Graham ( the real GOAT ) So this is the benchmark to beat.

Greatest Of All Tigers? Has to be Tony, doesn't it? *mic drop* After 56 years and hundreds of thousands of Frosted Flakes, I just noticed something. Tony's nose is blue. Why? What kind of fucked up tiger has a blue nose. Hobbes doesn't have blue nose.

Cocaine has a hell of an effect on tigers' noses. Or did you think all that energy actually came from the cereal?
