I'm sorry but that episode was the stupidest crap they've ever done. CRINGE. The only thing missing from it was a laugh track. If this is the path they are going this season count me out. It's a shame too, because even though earlier in the series there were some comedic moments, there was a lot you could take seriously also. It's a great premise with time travel and on that ship and with good characters so it is especially disappointing that they are going the route of a silly sitcom rather than doing some serious and compelling stories. Granted they were heavily leaning in that direction last season and there was a lot I didn't like, but this was worse than any of that.
Technically, at least according to my DVR and in spite of the last installment of Crisis technically being an episode of Legends of Tomorrow, the episode that aired last Tuesday was Season 5 Episode 1.
I still haven't gotten around to watching it and am seriously debating if I want to. I caught the first 30 seconds or so at the tail end of Arrow and that alone was cringeworthy enough not to want to watch it. I mean seriously, what the fuck are they doing anymore. This show could be so good without trying, but it's like everyone involved is just amazed that they keep getting picked up and have no idea what to do.
They could start by getting rid of Nate, the character's a douchebag. It's nothing specific, I just can't stand him. His powers are lame and poorly used, although they never play to any of the characters strengths. I mean, how many times did Ray actually wear the Atom suit last year? I wouldn't be surprised if it was single digits.
While we're at it, get rid of Ava; she has the personality of a wet mop and I see zero chemistry between her and Sara. I'm still annoyed Sara isn't Black Canary, because they nailed that on the first try and while I still like Caity Lotz and like seeing Sara on one of the shows, but I hate the white costume and I hate that instead of Sara being the fucking "Black Canary", we've got the likes of Dinah and Laurel; two character who combined don't measure up to one whole Sara.
She's also the only person in 8 seasons of Arrow that I remotely liked paired with Oliver...
The inclusion of Constantine really shows what this show should have been to start with, which is basically Justice League Dark. Misfit heroes chasing monsters and getting mixed up in the supernatural. They wouldn't have needed to call it "Justice League Dark" perse, it could have been House of Mystery or something; and instead of the Waverider, set in the House of Mystery from the Justice League Dark comics, which can move around or open portals to other places.
I have nothing against Matt Ryan's portrayal of Constantine, but if they had gone with the Justice League Dark concept to start with, they could have hit upon something great using Arthur Darvill as the Arrowverse's Constantine, back at a time before they folded Matt's Constatine in with the rest of the shows. That would have been a much better fit than making Arthur Rip Hunter; especially considering they basically dressed him more like Constantine to begin with.
It was dumb for them to give Mick the Fire totem and then have him get rid of it. He should have kept it. When he got it I thought, "Finally, it's about time they make his use of fire a more practical ability than just carrying a device around" - and then they inexplicably ditch it. Why? At least with the totem the random fluctuations in how powerful his use of fire is would be sensible; and you might even be able to explore other ways possess magic fire could be utilizes. Instead he's still got his stupid flame gun, shooting a blast at a giant Beebo half a city block away during Crisis and somehow doing fucking damage to it.
But Mick in general is a symptom of the problem with the writers; they don't know what to do with the fucking characters, so half the time they just make them caricatures or put them into ridiculous and forced situations. Mick being a successful romance novel had a certain novelty to it at first, but now they're beating not just a dead horse, a thorough decomposed horse. My biggest beef about the character of Mick is that, for one thing, I'm fairly certain the guy playing him is capable of a lot more than what they're writing for him. I based that on absolutely nothing, because I don't think I've actually seen him in anything else. I know he was in Prison Break and when I realized that, I looked up some clips on youtube out of curiosity and from what I can tell, he's actually a decent dramatic actor. As is the guy who played Snart, who for the life of me made some performance choices with Snart that I'll never understand. But with Mick, it's just 100% squandered potential and it's been that way from the start of the series. They knew they wanted to use this guy, but they didn't know what they wanted to do with him; which I'm pretty sure was the first line of their pitch for the series regarding all of the characters. But look at how they had Mick betrayed the rest of the team two consecutive seasons in a row, in large part because he struggled understanding his place on the team. The first instance is one of the greatest miscarriages of his character's development; because Mick turning out to be Chronos was actually kind of great and presented all sorts of possibilities. Here now was a character who had a lot more years behind than he had originally, he'd seen things as a time traveling bounty hunter; and would have had knowledge that should have made him the second greatest authority aboard the Waverider after Rip. But instead they just had him revert to a 2-dimensional idiot.
He should have become the captain when Rip left, if it was truly necessary to write Arthur off the series. And that's not a knock against Sara; she should have remained on Arrow and become the team leader of Team Arrow and later the star of a spin-off in the fall of 2020. However, it never made sense that Sara was remotely qualified to be the new captain; she learned jack shit from Rip about anything.
As I posted in another thread, I still content that we should find out that the Gideon aboard the Waverider is some sort of malevolent AI or something who has been messing with history and the legends for the last five years. They've already established that Gideon has the ability to get into people's heads; "she" got into Zari's head for the groundhog day episode two seasons back and commented about how she
tried to alter Mick's personality. Considering that characters like Ray, for example, have become pale imitations of the characters established on other shows before Legends started, it would be plausible to find out that she's been making them docile and ineffective heroes to suit whatever plan she's been executing; and maybe even making them her unwitting pawns.
