Rewatching the BBC miniseries of War & Peace. The Battle of Austerlitz being fought on a nice summer day. Leaves on the trees, flowers blooming. Of course, Austerlitz was fought on December 2nd, 1805. Anyone notice any more?

"The Battle of the Bulge" (1965)
The battle happened during an extremely cold winter, and most of the movie looks it, but the climactic confrontation between the German and American tanks (which never happened in real life BTW) was obviously not filmed in the snow. If the movie were made today a little CGI could easily fix that problem.

You can tell if it's really in winter because you can see the actor's breath. I realize that older Hollywood productions didn't film outside in the snow (Battleground being a good example). But many modern movies/TV shows use fake winter. Early Bame of Thrones.
Might be nitpicking, but, when you live ina place with a lot of winter, you notice these things more

I've only seen parts of Band of Brothers. If episode 6 is on the Internet I'll watch it and let you know.

Spielberg went to town with all his magic.

Seen a little of it on YouTube, along with its German counterpart called Generation War.

The breath is one thing. The scenes are good, but it's not cold enough (I'm being very critical here).
If I where to guess the temperature based on the scenes, it would have been between -5 to -10 celsius. It was colder than that.
It snows too much for one thing. The average temperature was about -20 degrees (according to a google search). At that temperature snow is highly unlikely.

If you look at actual wartime photos taken during the Battle of Bulge, there is virtually no snow on the ground during the first week -- only little piles of snow around the trunks of trees in heavily forested areas (if that). It was mostly just mud. It didn't start snowing until the second week.

Though filmed mostly on a sound stage, I really got the feel of winter in Battleground. The breathe steam is missing, but an excess of it would be distracting to watch. Battleground was a very accurate movie, if I remember. That was the days when Hollywood could push out historical horrorshows like Santa Fe Trail

Zulu (1964).
Great movie, crap history. The battle was fought in January when Rorke's Drift was covered in lush grass. The movie showed barren shrub.

An especial pity with War and Peace, as the keen observation and description of natural settings is one of the book's greatest strengths and pleasures.
