ISLAND OF LOST SOULS 6/10 Just like human/animal hybrids, Marlon Brando shows us 2 sides in THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU. His performance is good enough to convey through body language the innocence of someone who doesn't know why they're doing something wrong, and it's bad enough that he sounds like a character from a Tennessee Williams play leaving the dentist's office. The way in which the themes of the story are explained in the opening and closing narration is too obvious. The CG effects are very bad but, luckily, they're barely used. The practical effects are good but, in some shots, the creatures' make-up is noticeably incomplete. And no, I won't forgive these things just because of the troubled production (I saw the documentary LOST SOUL afterwards). That being said, it does some things better than ISLAND OF LOST SOULS: 1) The title character is a gentle but misguided person, just like in the novel, unlike the previous movie where he was the villain. However, I do give that movie credit for not portraying him as an over-the-top baddie (which was kind of a requirement for genre movies back then). 2) Both versions make it clear that the experiments are meant to be secrets, which is why the presence of outsiders might be a risk. In the original, they insist that Edward Parker should be taken away by the ship who found him (that doesn't happen because the captain is a drunken jerk). They're forced to take him to the island and they don't really do an effort to keep things a secret (he finds out about the experiments because a door was left open). In this remake, they take Edward Douglas (his counterpart) to the island without a real obligation... and then they lock him in a room. Both things are inconsistent, but the latter makes more sense. 3) In the original, the title and most of the credits were shown at the same time with almost the same font size. Even by 1932 standards, that was lazy. The remake has a real title sequence. It starts in a way that's very eerily but, after the title is shown, it turns into an LSD trip. 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

What about the 1977 version of Island Of Dr. Moreau with Burt Lancaster? What did you think of that one?
