This movie succeeds in making me feel claustrophobic but the characters were not as deep personality-wise as they were deep in the ocean's depths. The action takes place in darkness in which you can't tell what's going on half the time. While the promise of that great movie poster is never quite fulfilled, it's still an okay movie with some tension and one heck of an ugly monster. Kristen Stewart looks great with short blond hair, and does a fine job anchoring this movie.

I've read a few reviews that mention the darkness thing which is one of the reasons I'm waiting for this on streaming. It is a pet peeve of mine.

I keep hearing about how annoying TJ Miller is.

I saw the trailer for this a handful of times at the movies and thought it looked laughably silly and dumb. That, the unceremonious dumping of a January release date, plus seeing TJ Miller who has all but disappeared made me curious as to what was going on.
When I looked it up it seemed that it had been shot nearly 3 years before its release and just sat on a shelf for a while. That tends to be a bad sign and a show of no confidence for a movie from its distributors.
The critical and audience response wasn't as bad as I was guessing, but nor was it enthusiastic. Feels like the quintessential get-around-to-it-when-hits-Netflix kinda thing.

I just came back from it. Decent film, if nothing more. Surprisingly I enjoyed the build-up and mystery way more, and that’s before the monsters make themselves known. And it really throws you right into it, much quicker than expected and tautly takes hold as you gather info on the fly. The first death surprised me. However it seems to go for jump scares, and in doing so it sorta lacks tension at times, even character tension. Maybe this is because we don’t get any time with the characters before the shit hits the fan. As for the murky imagery, it didn’t bother me much, compared to say the editing around the attack scenes. But my interest was definitely beginning to drift, especially when they’re walking around on the ocean bed. It’s not until Kristen Stewart’s ingestive encounter and of course the Lovecraft-like monster reveal is where it had me hooked again. Too bad this beast comes on too late. Stewart definitely made the most of her part, and grounded the picture. Hell, even TJ Miller was bearable.

its basically a rip off of the 3 underwater movies of 1989. The Abyss Levethian and Deep Star six.
Quite terrible. 4/10.

Just caught it on HBOMax. Not as terrible as I thought, but totally rote and ordinary.
It had some good moments and some good imagery, but it's dumb and any rudimentary understanding of basic physics ruins most of it.
But, some of the effects are actually pretty cool and the reveal of who the creatures at the end are is at least sort of fun, although it doesn't do anything to open it up to the wider mythology that it could, but it does lazily set up a potential sequel.
But this movie is about this one particular experience in this environment that plays out in near real time. And as far as how well it does that, I'd say the movie is entirely average and adequate.
But maybe that's just because I thought it was gonna be awful.
