I don't really watch football (or any sport, really), and I only saw highlights of the game and not the game itself. But when I was watching the highlights, and the Chiefs had narrowed the lead to 20-17 and the 49ers had the ball with just a few minutes on the clock, I kept thinking, "Why aren't they just running out the clock?" Maybe I'm missing something (definitely possible when only watching highlights).

the funny thing about football and other sports too, is we would be asking the same question but against KC if the Niners score on that last possession and win the game. We would all be like "why didn't Andy Reid take more time off the clock when they scored late in the 4th qrtr". lol. And everyone would be saying what a terrible clock manager Andy Reid is....

There was too much time on the clock for the Niners to run it all out, but I do question Shanahan’s play calling when the Niners had a 2nd and 5 twice and proceeded to throw back to back times both times with Garoppolo missing each pass and the Niners going 3 and out both times. I wonder if the Niners ran the ball if they could’ve continued their drive while also running off more clock.

I think he had a problem in that when they did run the ball in the drives in question, they weren't getting any yards so it wasno't as simple as running 2 minutes off the clock, they needed points. I guess what they needed to do was methodically move the ball downfield to either run time off the clock or score.
The last time Shanahan coached in a Superbowl his team had a first and 10 at the 22 with an 8 point lead and only a few minutes left. At worst with sensible clock management, the Falcons should have had a 30-35 yard chipshot to ice the game with, at most, 3:30 left, and only that much if the Pats use all 3 of their time outs, which I doubt they would have. That clock management was shit house
