Every year one of the repertory movie theatres here in Montreal shows the shorts that have been nominated for the Oscars.
These are the nominees in the animation category:
Dcera (Daughter) – Daria Kashcheeva Hair Love – Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver Kitbull – Rosana Sullivan and Kathryn Hendrickson Memorable – Bruno Collet and Jean-François Le Corre Sister – Siqi Song
I liked all of them except the first one. My favourite was "Memorable", about an old painter suffering from Alzheimer's and his wife who has to take care of him. Beautiful, artistic animation and very touching too. But I think "Hair Love" is probably going to win.
Live action nominees:
Brotherhood – Meryam Joobeur and Maria Gracia Turgeon Nefta Football Club – Yves Piat and Damien Megherbi The Neighbors' Window – Marshall Curry Saria – Bryan Buckley and Matt Lefebvre A Sister – Delphine Girard
They were all pretty good. My favourite was "The Neighbor's Window" but I have the feeling that "Saria" will probably win, because of the subject matter - the terrible conditions in a girl's orphanage in Guatemala.

I saw a bunch of them on Vimeo (as well as Pixar's official YouTube channel) before the nominations were even announced. My favorites are DCERA and THE NEIGHBORS' WINDOW. I liked SARIA, HAIR LOVE, KITBULL and SISTER, but I didn't love them. I found BROTHERHOOD and NEFTA FOOTBALL CLUB to be too flawed that I can't really saw I liked them... but I didn't dislike them either.

I saw both Hair Love and Kitbull for animated shorts and only saw Nefta Football Club for live action short.
