Program Files\7-Zip\7zFM.exe Right-click that, run as admin. when I try that it goes into a quick blip and vanishes, But the file manager opens.
Weird. If I were you, I would just try reinstalling it real quick.

I just tested it on Windows 10 Virtual Machine and what I said should work... On Windows 10 where it shows 'Type here to search', type in '7-zip' (without the ') and it should find '7-zip File Manager (app)' and RIGHT CLICK on this and select 'run as administrator' then... Tools > Options > System. and using the "+" symbol you should be able to change file associations.
I see so I click it and they all change to 7-zip then I press apply then ok?
Yes, but he's saying that if you aren't running it as admin, those settings won't stick. Also, you might not want all the files listed to be associated with 7-Zip. Check only the ones you want to open with it.

Admin Yeah, they got alternatives to 7-zip like Bandizip (i.e. www.bandisoft.com/bandizip/ ) etc, but I always just stuck with the more standard 7-zip program (i.e. www.7-zip.org/ ) Prime etc. Yeah, it's all done through that general screen.
select what you want to change and click + sign etc. I am sure you get the gist of it
p.s. I just mainly affiliate .7z / .rar / .zip with 7-zip since that should cover just about everything one will use.

Prime etc. select .7z or .rar or .zip in that menu and click the + sign. that should work.
also, I am assuming a .d64 file is strictly for the emulator itself. so don't affiliate this with 7-zip etc. my guess is that emulator probably has a 'roms' folder you need to put that .d64 file into for the emulator to play that specific game.

Prime etc.Is your computer in good running order as far as you can tell? it might be worth uninstalling 7-zip, reboot, and reinstall it and see if you can get proper file associations then.

Um... What happens when you try to open a zip file directly? Does it open in 7-Zip or uTorrent? Because I'm starting to wonder if maybe you're just trying to reset the icon. lol

Admin exactly. because after the file association is setup. just close out of the 7-zip and extract your stuff like usual. which I usually open the .zip file etc directly and then extract it to a location of my choice.
hell, if he trusts you... you could setup Team Viewer (i.e. www.teamviewer.com/en/ ) and you could directly check this stuff yourself by connecting to his computer and controlling his desktop etc.

It opens in 7-zip now-but shows as the utorrent icon.
And the computer better be in working order after all the shit I had to install on it (though my brother installed 7-zip).

Prime etc. are you saying the .d64 file is affiliated with the uTorrent icon somehow? ; if so, I would just ignore it and run the .d64 file through the emulator program itself since I am going to assume the .d64 file is the game you want to play, correct?
because when I use emulators I never affiliate a ROM file extension directly to a emulator program as I always load up the emulator program and load the game from within the emulator.
You should not have to install much. like assuming someone wiped your drive and installed Windows 10 clean, just install say video card drivers and some basic programs you use and that's that you should be pretty much good.
I am not a fan of loading it down with a bunch of anti-virus and the like software as it just wastes resources. just be careful on what you do on your computer and you should be good with the default anti-virus software (i.e. Windows Defender) that comes pre-installed by default.
Admin ? I just open the .7z/.rar/.zip file directly, like usual, and it's affiliated with the 7-zip program.

Try rebuilding your icon cache. 1. Open a File Explorer window. 2. At the top left click the view tab and select(check)"Hidden Items." 3. Go to C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Local. 4. Right click on IconCache. db and click on Delete. 5. Click on Yes to confirm the deletion. ... 6. Close the window. 7. Empty the Recycle Bin. 8. Restart the computer.

I tried that--but it doesn't load now-and that was even though I was using the unzipped version from a few days ago. Something fucking weird happened. ugh The one time I decided I would play games instead of working or reading....

AdminI see what you mean, but off the top of my head I never messed with it as I never seen a need to as once a thing is extracted I close it and that's that.

Weird, does the emulator program itself even load up?
if it does, you should be able to load the unzipped ROM file directly and it should work as this is normally how that stuff is done.
Yeah, I see what you mean. lol
normally you couldn't care less but now that you actually want to play a game, everything just fails.

AdminI see what you mean, but off the top of my head I never messed with it as I never seen a need to as once a thing is extracted I close it and that's that. The problem is that I extract by dragging the files from 7-Zip to a folder in explorer. This puts explorer on top, which usually hides the 7-Zip window. I avoid this by positioning the 7-Zip window first (it opens in a cascade fashion from its last position - luckily the window size sticks), but if it would just stay on top, I could rid myself of this years-long annoyance.

Hell, I never thought about doing it that way as it might be a bit quicker than the way I have been doing it as I usually click extract and then select the location etc. but given the way you do it... I can easily see why you want 7-zip to stay on top now
