Christ! I thought Joker was dull but this takes the cake. I stuck it out till the end just because I wanted to give all the Oscar films a run but my god was that a struggle. There is probably a good film in there somewhere but it got lost along the way. Won't someone get QT a fucking editor? The guy has been an over-indulgent bore since KB:V1.
Anyhoo I've seen:
Ford v Ferrari: 5/10 The Irishman: 7.5/10 Jojo Rabbit 4/10 Joker 5/10 Marriage Story 6/10 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 4.5/10 (45 mins to an hour shorter and it might have been a 7) Parasite 9/10
So far Parasite is head and shoulders the best one I've seen but it won't win it. Apart from that and The Irishman not a great Oscar year. Hoping Little Women and 1917 can deliver.

It’s the only one of the nominees I’ve seen.
6/10 from me.
Definitely too tong and rambling.
The last 20 minutes were pretty juvenile I thought.

He paid a lot to make those roads and highways look like 1969 so he used them a lot. Take an hour off the film and it would be a lot better. But it's the emperors new clothes with QT, no matter what he does, people rave no matter how shitty it is.

Then again I realise Korean cinema, and its sensibilities, are not to everyone's tastes. It's the best of the bunch for me and, probably, the only must see on the list so far.

I used to be a huge fan but have been disappointed with his output after his first 3 films. There have been glimpses of absolute brilliance, the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds and several scenes in Django and both KB films, but all the good stuff gets lost in the self-indulgence.

I had no idea it existed before that. Probably best to wait as its a gorgeous looking film too.

When people say cut an hour out of a movie it really means like 8 mins, of course.
But this is a film about characters living on borrowed time. We know as an audience that the free wheeling existence of this era is about to come to tragic, screeching halt and the culture will never be the same, but they don't. So the easy pace and relaxed vibe of so much of the film IS the film. That and the bathing in nostalgia is kinda the whole point... until the film gives us a fittingly pulpy alternate ending straight out out of the movies of the main characters, that gives us the fairy tale finish where everything would be ok and the old culture and the new could get along and compliment one another. That's the fantasy.
And of course there's a lot that's been cut out. Lots of money and famous people were exised.
Anyone as successful and as big a name as Tarantino will have people who are looking to enjoy his film going in, and then of course there are those who watch with the goal of having something to complain about and claim others don't actually like it.

So I became a leech for a few months and then just stopped completely. Although funnily enough last month I did download a Scandi crime series. That was the first time I’ve done it in many years.

I understand all that but there is easy going and entertaining, and then there is long-winded, superfluous and dull. A lot of this film fell into the latter category. As I said above there is a good film in there but it just gets lost in QT's excesses. Which, IMO, has been a problem of his for a good few years now.

Now thats a film that needed good editing and was far too long which is why it wont win best Picture.

I love all of the little digressions and side tracks we go down. I love the holding on shots for longer and getting lost in narrative of the tv show. I love that it's a story essentially just about one, relatively mundane but totally indicative and evocative day in the life of these characters and a time just before the frantic and hectic pace of life how it then skips ahead to reinforce that theme. Not everybody has to like it, but the idea that it's just 'indulgent' and not the intent of the film is just silly, and the 'emperor's new clothes' idea is even more ridiculous and stupid.

I'm a huge Tarantino fan, but thinking this movie's great has nothing to do with my fandom. I honestly think it's a phenomenal film. Wasn't bored any, thought it was interesting from beginning and especially to the end. I get that it's not action packed and the movie is really just about three people going about their normal routines over the course of a few days, but it's an examination on changing cultures, a tribute to Sharon Tate, and a buddy hangout movie. I'd say every scene was necessary to tell the story it wanted to tell and how it wanted to tell it. Sure, it doesn't make for the most exciting or riveting movie, but it was still incredibly enjoyable imo.

No, I criticise the film for being too self-indulgent and consequently dull, which makes it length almost unbearable. For me The Irishman did not seem even a fraction of it's run-time as it kept my interest throughout.

I enjoyed much of the Irishman but not De Niro's perpetual childish scowl and I don't get Pesci. Never did. When Keitel turned up, I groaned and half expected Di Caprio to join in for this "Scorcese's Old Boys playhouse". Fortunately, we got a lot of Pacino which saved the movie for me. Pacino has earned himself the reputation of being Hollywood's loudest actor yet I can't help recalling his performances in the first two Godfather movies where, in comparison to James Caan, he hardly raised his voice

Dead on. I don't usually like QT films and OUATIH was possibly my favorite film of 2019. And hey, it isn't for everyone so I understand the criticism to a degree, especially regarding the run time. But I also find the argument that 'people only like it because it's popular' to be the most generic critique in all of pop culture, not just film. What can I say, the themes and ideas presented, in a fashion maybe only QT can pull off properly, really resonated with me. As I said, I'm usually not a QT fan, so we can throw the 'emperor's new clothes' theory out the window. Should we make the assumption everyone criticizing the film is doing it to be edgy instead of expressing their legitimate opinion?

One hour into "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" I turned to my friend and joked "when does the movie start?". That doesn't mean I disliked it though; I actually liked it a lot, bought the blu-ray when it came out, and have been meaning to watch it soon, being able to rewind and watch some parts again. It's definitely a departure for Quentin Tarantino, whose previous movies were always PLOT-driven, not character-driven.
I loved "Parasite" and I am a big fan of Korean cinema, but I really hope it doesn't win the Best Picture Oscar. Not that it would be undeserving, it's just that I really hate the notion that the Academy tries to push that the Oscars are the world film awards. They aren't; they are essentially the Hollywood awards, with a few nominations for international films here and there just to keep the illusion going. If "Parasite" wins, in the minds of a lot of people it will be a confirmation that the fact that 95+% of the Oscar-nominated movies and performances are American, it must be because the overwhelming majority of quality movies is made in the USA, and not simply because the Oscars are inherently biased toward American movies (and I am not implying that this bias is wrong, or should not exist).
Without having seen "The Irishman" and "Marriage Story", if I had a vote it would go to "1917".

I actually really liked Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, there really wasn't a huge point to the film. It's more just a look at Hollywood and LA during that time period. If you have an interest in that sort of thing than it's likely going to appeal to you. However, if you aren't really into that very specific theme then it likely seems pointless. It's one of those things though like Seinfeld in that even though there really is no point and is many ways about nothing it's still exceptionally well made. The acting and directing are all top notch.
