What are you most anticipated upcoming films made outside Hollywood. 4 from me which will hopefully make it to cinemas (or at least festivals) this year. When the Waves Are Gone [Lav Diaz/Philippines] - Diaz continues his astounding run of releasing pretty much a film a year for the past decade with this apparently noirish take on The Count of Monte Christo, no doubt in his usual inimitable style. I’m still yet to see last year’s The HaltDays [Tsai Ming-liang/Taiwan] - After years of shorts and video experiments Tsai returns with his first feature since 2013’s Stray DogsEureka [Lisandro Alonso/Argentina] - His first feature since the gorgeous Jauja [2014] (top 10 of the decade IMO) The film will be a “journey in time and space” between 1870 and 2019, and taking place in United States, Mexico, and the Amazon rainforest with a focus on Native American culture. The Woman Who Ran [Hong Sang-soo/South Korea] - After a year off, Hong’s back with another intimate dissection of modern love and relationships

Some of the things on my radar for the coming year:
South Korea:
The Man Standing Next – it’s already been released theatrically at the end of 2019, but I’m hoping it’ll get a subtitled treatment soon. From what I’ve heard, it’s a rather different take on the assassination of President Park Chung-hee to what was depicted in The President’s Last Bang, this time with Lee Byung-hun playing the Kim Jae-gyu role.
Bring Me Home – another 2019 release; Lee Yeong-ae’s first feature film since 2005’s Sympathy for Lady Vengeance has to be worth checking out.
Japan:
Prisoners of the Ghostland – Sion Sono and Nicolas Cage? You gotta be kidding me, right? I’m in!
First Love – another hangover from 2019 I’m still waiting to appear. No doubt Takashi Miike will have released half a dozen more films in the three or four months this one takes to finally arrive.
China:
Anything with Vicky Chen or Tan Zhuo in it.
Love After Love – Ann Hui and Christopher Doyle
Thailand:
One for the Road – Nattawut Poonpiriya’s follow-up to Bad Genius
Philippines:
Filipino indie cinema is up there with the best, I just wish they would stop being so insular and subtitle/distribute their frickin’ films.
Nightshift - Yam Laranas made a really good horror The Road back in 2011, and he’s got a new film coming out promises great actors like Ruby Ruiz and Mercedes Cabral alongside, errm, Xu Zheng?
Babae at Baril (The Girl with the Gun) – First film by Rae Red, co-writer of Birdshot and cousin of Mikhail.
Block Z – Up until now, the world has been sadly lacking Filipino zombie movies – Mikhail Red (cousin of Rae) promises to change that.
Verdict – the late Kristoffer King won a best actor late last year at SGIFF; I really hope this film gets a broader distribution.

I forgot about the Sono, yes looking forward to that, as well as his other recent offering The Forest of Love. I'm a bit behind with him, I've still not even seen the Tokyo Vampire Hotel mini-series. I'm even more behind on my Miike, but then I've never been his biggest fan and he's so ridiculously prolific.

Sono is generally "hit" for me, though I do find the lack of focus in a lot of his films a little frustrating. My favorites are where he has a more singular vision ( Tag, The Whispering Star, Antiporno).

Shaping up to possibly be a good year, a lot of my favorites with upcoming films:
Blossoms [Wong Kar-wai/Hong Kong] - who knows when we'll get to see this long-awaited, much-delayed new project from the Hong Kong auteur. Sounds "epic" and could be his "master work" if it eventuates.
Memoria [Apichatpong Weerasethakul/Thailand, various] - this one may even be in English, set in Columbia? and starring Tilda Swinton
Shulan River [Hou Hsiao-hsien/Taiwan] - another one that may not make it to cinemas this year. Sounds intriguing Taking place in modern-day Taipei, Hou Hsiao-Hsien focuses on a lonely river goddess whose waterways have now been covered by modern roadways.
