Might be decent, but that title is fucking terrible.
Maybe they could have done a Cloverfield-ish kinda thing where nobody knew that it was related to Saw until they were in the theater and just titled it Spiral. Let the rumor mill leak that it might have something to do with the Saw movies to drum up interest.
That might have been cool. 'From the book of Saw' is not cool.

The only thing that's really turning me off is the involvement of Bousman. Tells me this will probably just be more of the same, bizarre casting choices aside.

This may have potential. Definitely looks like it could be a lot fresher than what Jigsaw (2017) claimed to be (though I still liked that one alright).

There's obviously a lot of detective movie tropes going on here, but it does seem like its stepping outside of the repetitive formula of the Saw movies that never worked for me to begin with. It seems like there is gonna be some more focus on characterization and maybe less on obnoxious editing and camera work, annoying music, gore, and unnecessarily elaborate traps. I still don't have much of any interest in any Sae movies, but this one is more intriguing than the last 46 of them.

I like the Saw franchise to be honest, but I would like for them to go in a new direction with the heart and soul still intact.

Seems like a lot of detective-themed horror movies are bound to borrow elements from Se7en in some shape or form. I mean that movie pretty much solidified that type of genre, but there really is no other way of doing it?

Sure, it's hard to for detective-themed horror to escape Se7en comparisons, but Spiral goes the extra step of focusing on an old black cop and his young new partner. Replace the seven deadly sins with ACAB (though even that was basically done in Saw II) and the freshest thing about it is that it barely ties back to the others. Every reference to the Saw franchise is in the trailer.

Chris Rocks dramatic roles so far have been increasingly underwhelming so no thank you... I'm hoping I'll be surprised by Rock's performance... But meh. It's hard for me to take him seriously. His acting seems over the top. To be fair I've never seen him in a non-comedic role. Granted "odd" casting choices like Chester Bennington or Donnie Wahlberg etc. have worked for me in past films.

To be perfectly honest, when I heard Chris Rock was involved, I thought it was going to have a comedy angle to it.

To be perfectly honest, when I heard Chris Rock was involved, I thought it was going to have a comedy angle to it. The comedy angle is watching Chris Rock try and fail to give a dramatic performance in a Saw movie. He's supposed to be this gruff, hard-boiled detective who yells a lot, but it just sounds like he's doing one of his standup routines without punchlines. It's completely earnest, but people in the audience laughed out loud even while he was being tortured.

Chris Rocks dramatic roles so far have been increasingly underwhelming so no thank you... I thought he did fine in Fargo S4, even though I found the season as a whole extremely underwhelming. I think he's capable of more. Not expecting this movie to be the perfect showcase for that, though.
