I've long heard others maintain Jon Voight may've been great within the role and I know Jack Palance was considered as well.

Jack Palance did a movie CRAZE where he is possessed by an idol. He would not have worked in the movie the way it was made. But then the main problem with Nicholson for me is he acts like Crazy Jack as soon as they are driving up.

The thing about Jack, when's he playing a psychopath you're not sure how much of it is an actual act.

Stephen King criticized Kubrick's decision in the book "On Writing". One point was that Nicholson was already known for playing deranged characters. King went on to say as well, that Nicholson should have been cast as Barry Lyndon and Ryan O'Neal as Jack Torrance. I think that may have worked better. Still, the film does not seem to suffer for Nicholson's performance.

The Ramsey Campbell review of the Shining in the Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural is interesting. He said Jack becomes like a hunchback killer towards the end in the maze, carrying the axe, recalling much older films with such characters.

Christopher Walken -- peaceful teacher in THE DEAD ZONE slowly becoming unhinged by a power might have also been effective in THE SHINING.
