What would we do if a non-English animated movie gets nominated for best picture, foreign and animated and it won all 3? Being that not even Spirited Away could do that, if a film did get nominated for all 3, "We" should rush to watch it ASAP.

I just wonder whether they can really appraise the film properly if they aren't fluent in Korean. Can you really judge the film as best if you cannot understand the language and determine if a performance is good or not? How would you know what is a skilled emotional recitation of a dialogue line if you don't know the language intimately? You need subtitles for it. How could you even begin to appraise the best anything. What a lame excuse to not overcome the "One inch barrier" (to quote Ho) the superb performances of acters/ actresses over the decades such as Isabelle Huppert,Ivan Mistrík and Tabu can be reconised in any langurage.

Why? It applies to French or any other language, although there may well be certain behavioral traits as well-like the differences between western and eastern humor-to factor in.
It just goes to show how silly a "best" award is.
Which 19th century novel is most deserving of the Best Book award? How would you judge? Who judges? So ultimately it is a silly PR contest. Maybe to distract from the fact that Hollywood seeks to be entertainer to the globe and doesn't want national cinema or independent artists.
REAL friends of the arts.

I have no desire to see any of them. None of the plots appeal to me in the least. I'd rather watch a Santo film to be honest.

So you didn't see the movie, but you can confidently and apparently without any second thoughts proclaim that it didn't deserve to win, that its victory was just a stunt by the Academy. Right. Got it.

Incidentally, I think Parasite is the best Oscar Best Film winner since the 1970s ... I'll take your rec - or more accurately rave - on PARASITE and bump it to the top of my list. Please do not be influenced by me. You and I have very different taste in movies. Take the advice of someone normal instead.

Interesting thing is that at the 35th Academy Awards "Divorce Italian Style" was nominated for three awards EXCEPT Best Foreign Language Film. How did that happen as it was an Italian film with subtitles?

How did that happen as it was an Italian film with subtitles? Perfectly logical. It could have had the best screenplay (for which it won the Oscar), the best male lead and the best director (both nominated without winning), but not be the best flick overall. Unusual case, I agree, but quite feasible. The winner was Fellini's 8 1/2. I would not argue with that.
