Their prestige pic The Irishman went home empty handed. No love for The Two Popes either. Only Laura Dern won best supporting for Marriage Story.

Good! I was happy for Dern, but not that it was for Netflix. Would rather have had Johansson win. Best performance by an actress in a streaming movie.

Arquette was always the favorite to win that year and while I haven't seen the film, I was very happy for her, until she ruined it all with her narcissistic feminist rant about how wonderful women are and how poorly they are treated in the industry....waa waa waa! I wouldn't have minded in Knightly had won for Imitation Game.

The Irishman is on the same level (or close to it) as a film like The Color Purple which got a bunch of nominations but didn't win anything.

I still don't think they should be nominated. They're essentially made for TV movies. No theatrical release = No awards!

Laura Dern won best supporting for Marriage Story. You just contradicted the title of your own thread. 😂 Anyway, does it matter? Netflix movies still got a bunch of nominations, including 2 for Best Picture. And a Netflix movie was among the biggest winners last year (including the prestigious Best Director category).

Not much of a surprise, the academy still hasn't come around to Netflix quite yet, they probably think it's the same thing as made for TV movies and direct to DVD fodder. It also wouldn't suprise me if there's some collusion going on between the Academy and the major studios, there's too much money in theatrically released films, they don't want Netflix stealing some of their profits, it's in the studio's interest to keep the spotlight away from them.

Fascinating theory about why The Irishman failed to take home the big awards. That's the keyword.

The Irishman wasn’t that great. Too long and too slow in parts.

Netflix totally won the Oscars.
They are accepted as legit one year after Spielberg said they shouldn’t be there at all.
They had nominations in a large portion of categories.
While they certainly wanted to win as many Oscars as possible, like most studios the nomination itself creates buzz.
They ONLY care about subscriber base and they hope this moves the needle for movie lovers even as they lose movie studio support.
