Are American films considered for awards in other countries? I realize they are at Cannes, etc. But how about South Korea? Honest question.

American films or Hollywood films? I made the mistake of saying to someone from Minnesota that American films were better than Canadian and the response I got was a blank look from the Classical Studies major and : "But Hollywood isn't American culture."

I'm perfectly okay with Parasite winning best picture, but I wish it hadn't won best foreign language pic, there were some other really worthy nominees in that category, smaller movies which would've deserved to win too. Winning both best picture and best foreign language picture seems just too much to me.
I know logically it had to win in the foreign category, since it also won best film, but to me this is just awards overkill.

A lot of countries have award shows dedicated only to local productions and they usually have a category for foreign films (that naturally allows American films). Some are especific when it comes to the area (like Best European Film). I can't find a South Korean ceremony that currently does this.

If it can already be in "Best Foreign Language" then what in the heck is it doing in Best Pic? It belongs ONLY in BFL and that's where it should have stayed.

This thread makes me feel warm and fuzzy. It's hilarious.
God Bless Bong Joon Ho and NEON for outing all the Xenophobes.

I think the main issue is that despite being by far the most popular/well known Annual film awards, The Oscars seem trapped in this weird middle ground between being completely International like Cannes or other festivals (where multiple non-English language films compete, quite often win and the US sometimes barely gets a look in) and "local" nation-specific awards that I'm sure just about every country has catering to their own industry.

Time to blow up the Academy's "one-country-one-film" rule that the Academy has. Now that Parasite won best picture, the Best International or Foreign language category no longer holds merit. Additionally, the Academy will have to discard the one country one film rule so now hundreds if not thousands of films need to be reviewed and considered.

I'm pretty sure they have that rule to avoid receiving too many submissions from each country.

If they're good enough to do so and get enough votes, then yes.

I am perfectly fine with foreign films winning Best Picture.
After all, it may be the best picture.

Irrelevant viewpoint. Best Picture is for Best Picture. That would include foreign, American, English, animated, and even documentary.
