Did not see: Ordinary People, Chariots of Fire, Gandhi, Terms of Endearment, Out of Africa, Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy. It was a busy decade for me with work and women.
So left with just these, but they were definitely much better than the sixties or seventies. At least the critically acclaimed ones were better.

Raging Bull is the best Hollywood/American movie of that decade, imo. And Ordinary People doesn't even belong on that list at all.
This is the finest example of how the Academy Awards are a popularity contest and not a judge of quality. Ordinary People won because Robert Redford directed it, and he was, and still is, amongst the Hollywood beloved.
Look at any list by critics of the best 80's movies, and not only does Raging Bull either take the top spot or ends up near the top, but also Ordinary People doesn't even make the list at all. See for yourselves.
