Many hailed it as the one of the best horrors recently since Insidious. I didn't make of it when I first saw it. The ending kind of wakes you up after a mediocre experience. Eventually you will be tempted to see the sequel which is fun to watch, but lacks the horror element slightly. It is only then you revisit the original one appreciates it for it's true quality. I personal opinion I felt that without the twist climax the film wouldn't feel as satisfying. I would give special mention to the background score. It suited the tone of the movie and really supplemented the atmosphere well. I've never heard such frightening music in my life.
Ethan Hawkes plays his character well and his wife doesn't have much to do unfortunately. I couldn't understand why he had to keep discoveries and findings a secret from her. Their home was poorly lit at night. And even during the day there was hardly any sunlight coming in to the home. Not forgetting how the killer would have had the physical strength to tie up the victims.
