It IS very faithful to the book. I love it. Something about Sam Waterston’s narration makes it magical to me.

I adored it - 10/10 and yes - V faithfull - Agree Waterston's narrator VG - Farrow quite wonderful and Lois Chiles incredibly sexy as Jordan Baker, Nick's love interest, the golf cheat. Party scenes dazzle,Costumes, cars all sleek and lovely. The 49 and recent Leo versions were ok The Mira sorvino one mediocre. Shame the 26 one "lost".
Gatsby Girl Lois Chiles - near the top of my list of "Why weren't they huge?" names - She caught the eye in THE WAY WE WERE and GATSBY, got bumped off early in COMA and DEATH ON THE NILE (excellent as snotty heiress Linnet - Gal Gadot I think has the role in the upcoming Branagh), the luscious Holly Goodhead in the underrated MOONRAKER... and then nothing...

I can see Redford as Gatsby. But I thought it was dull. I much prefer the DiCaprio version.

His father is of Italian and German descent, and his mother, who is German-born, is of German and Russian ancestry. “

I thought Redford was the main problem. Nothing about the book indicated tgat Gatsby was a beauty. And Redford’s own rock solid character got in the way. It was impossible for me to believe Redford’s Gatsby wouldn’t just Smack Bruce Dern.
I love Sam Waterston but there was something cold about him throughout the film. He needed to be more enthusiastic about the whole thing
Mia Farrow, who the Hell knows what she was thinking? Cold, vain, silly... nothing that makes you understand why Gatsby even remembered her. If Daisy was a version of Zelda, Fitzgerald’s wife, she was complex, brilliant, eccentric, impulsive, and altogether memorable. Daisy needs a lot more of that quality.
The casting of second roles was brilliant Dern, Black ,Chiles, Howard Da Silva, all spot on and very satisfying.

We watched this version in high school after reading the book. I thought it was pretty dry compared to the book. I revisited it a decade or so later and still thought the same way. The cast is impressive but it just seems "distant" and doesn't connect with the viewer.

It was a faithful adaptation of the novel and the cast was mostly excellent, but it just didn't connect emotionally resonate with me.
