It's not Bristol City, they have played top flight in the early 1900s.
Total guess... Preston North End?

Clue: 41 seasons in second tier (not consecutively obviously).

I was going to guess Plymouth Argyle. I knew Barnsley had the most seasons in the second tier, and comfortably so.
Next Trivia question - Which two clubs have spent the longest time in the Football League together, but have never played in the same division, and therefore never played a league match ?

As a fan of the Tykes, the Championship is our natural home. While it was great winning the EFL Trophy and the playoff spot in League One a couple of year ago, it just doesn't feel right not seeing Barnsley's name in the Championship. Oy one season in the top flight, though it should have been two. We got fucked up the Arse(nal) after WW1. In spite of finishing 3rd in the second tier, the Gunners chairman campaigned for the final spot to be decided by a member's ballot and then bribed the clubs to vote for his. Bastards the lot of 'em.
It's kind of like Carlton hating Collingwood because of a game in 1910 isn't it, but here we are.

They did make the Premier one season a decade ago. An interesting ownership history recently. Lemmy got his start playing there in the 60s pre-Hawkwind. The town has the 4th highest murder rate in England.
