Saw the trailer for it today at the beginning of ‘The Grudge’. Sort of came out of nowhere. I never thought ‘The Boy’ would get a sequel, although I can’t remember if it finished on a ‘sequel’ ending. From the trailer it looks like a possession film with shades of Annabelle. Looks slickly made too.

BRAHMS: THE BOY PART II (why would you use the RAMBO franchise as a precedent on how to name your sequels?!) is mostly boring, although the pacing a little better compared to THE BOY PART I thanks to the shorter running time. Katie Holmes, Christopher Convery and Ralph Ineson's performances are decent. The long takes don't really add anything to their respective scenes (some of them are even sloppy), but I still appreciate how director William Brent Bell tried to inject life into this product. Ironically, he ruins that by constantly resorting to predictable jump scares. Its predecessor was yet another "evil plaything" entry that tried to re-invent the sub-genre by revealing at the end that there was nothing supernatural going on. Why would you make a follow-up and try to pretend like the doll is possessed when the audience already knows the truth? The title character is found by a boy whose name is... Hmmm... I think Jude. I'm not sure, because his parents only say his name 10,000 times. Around the 30-minute mark, we get direct confirmation that Brahms is sentient. It's not the first time that a sequel has retconned the original, but this is such an unusual case, because both installments were written and directed by the same people. There's a scene where a boy named Will starts messing with Jude and a girl named Sophie. My initial reaction was "What a little shit-head!", but Will calls them boyfriend and girlfriend whenever they defend each other. My reaction to that was "Dude, that's your sister and your cousin! I know bullies gotta bully, but what the fuck?!" 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
