Do you think Parasite will be a Best Picture winner that will be remembered or forgotten over time?

1st foreign language winner ain't nothing. They said the same thing about the dreadful Life is Beautiful. It scooped up a lot of awards and was hyped from the media. Now, Parasite is a great film, but I'm not sure if it'll be remembered like many winners.

I might watch it but I am so wary of watching Oscar films anymore, they are usually so very disappointing.

In terms of Academy Awards history it will always be remembered. First movie to make certain milestones. But in terms of audiences hearts? Probably not so much.

Who knows. I need to see it. But seriously, who remembers the winner from 5 years ago? I consider myself fairly knowledgeable in film but the past decade has had a series of forgettable winners.

Yeah, people will remember...remember the words on the bottom of the screen! Come on, that movie sucked. No one has time to watch a bunch of Thai people speaking Mandarin for two hours. It's called Best Picture of the Year, which means Best American And Or British Picture of the Year. And let's face it, it's those films people remember. Classic American films like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Not foreign films.
Best Picture used to mean something, when it was awarded to instant classics that have stood the test of time like Argo. Now it's all political, unlike Argo. Fuck Parasite. Boring and forgettable.
I haven't seen it yet.

Spotlight, Parasite, Argo, Green Book, Shape of Water, Birdman, Moonlight.
Yup I think its gonna join these as forgotten. None of these recent winners have an iconic or epic feel about them or any memorable standout character.

It's honestly a solid flick.
I can't say whether or not it will be forgotten because I don't make these decisions but I would give it Oldboy status. I mean, it's not a forgettable film at all for me and I believe it will stand the test of time, but it's not a cultural milestone either.
It'll absolutely end up on "must watch" lists.

Maybe, maybe not. Is the fact that it broke certain cultural barriers enough to make it memorable? A lot of people might be surprised to find out "Night of the Living Dead" was one of, if not the first Hollywood film to feature a black lead character, but it's cultural releveance lies more in being a highly iconic and influential horror film than breaking certain social/movie norms.

Playing the odds... ForgottenI was just looking up that movie and there is no way in hell it should be #21 in the IMDb Top 250. I have not even seen it yet, as I might see it, but it's pretty safe for me to claim I won't like it THAT much. it will likely be overrated in my mind. p.s. the last time a 'Best Picture Winner' was of any real worth in my mind... The Departed (2006) and not only that but that movie will be remembered. hell, even just going back to a Oscar year with a movie worth mentioning for me, I would have to go back to 2013 with Nebraska (although in terms of wide public, my best guess, is that won't be all that appealing with the masses so probably not remembered all that much but probably not a total loss either etc). Jason143 ; Exactly. that's a great point as we can pretty much write off the winners of the 2010's decade as forgettable. @jamesavalon Hell, looking at ALL 'Best Picture' movies... not many stand the test of time with the general public. hell, even being a little generous in the Best Picture nominee's favor... it's still a EASY majority are largely forgotten not that long after the awards season is over. sure, given they were nominated that makes them at least somewhat remembered for those who look into Oscar history etc but short of that, they are basically forgotten by the public at large.

It’ll likely be more well remembered in years to come than Jojo Rabbit or 1917.

Which was the last Best Picture winner that people still talk about? "No Country For Old Men"? That was 13 years ago. The Oscars have become a complete waste of time for moviegoers.
I'm not sure who is to blame? Is it because cinema is dying on it's ass and there aren't as many good movies anymore? Or maybe Oscar has become too political and lost site of why he was created in the first place?

People keeping saying "the general public" won't remember the movie in a few years. I say, so what? For film lovers, and fans on the movie itself, it will be remembered. Parasite, I think, will most certainly be studied in film schools and college courses.

Its Oscar win will be remembered more than the film itself.

It's not easy to be remembered unless it's a big commercial film.
