Commercials, ad-time, sponsors, talking heads in the booth paying little attention to the actual game but instead prattling on endlessly about contracts and the "big picture". All of this stuff takes time to do. Unless baseball wants to seriously tackle this stuff (and they never will), the pace of the game will get slower and slower. But weren't those all there in 1981 as well? There weren't as many nationally televised games, but even when I had a 13 channel television, I had access to Phillies, Yankees, Mets, and Orioles games. Even back then, Bill White and Phil Rizzuto talked about everything but the game (although I loved hearing them call a game). All that stuff was there before, that is true, but the time spent on those things has most definitely increased.

I personally like the 3 batter rule for relievers. Now, that opinion may change once I see it in action but I like the premise of it. I find it highly annoying seeing a half inning last for 30 minutes because of constant pitching changes so a lefty can come in and face 1 batter. Since when are lefty relievers treated with such kid gloves that they can only pitch to lefty hitters? It seems like that has just increased and increased in recent years that there has become maybe a handful of lefty pitchers that are deemed worthy enough to face right handed hitters. If you're a left handed pitcher that can only get out left handed hitters, why are you in the major leagues?
