Theaters don’t care about them and they don’t care about theaters except to the extent they can get recognition..
They are in the movie business solely to expand their streaming business.

I don't think it's necessary for them to do wide theatrical releases. It's just gonna cost too much. Limited theatrical releases I think work well. They're good promotion for the films.

I'd be surprised if they ever did.

Let's be honest: Movie theaters are dead. This doesn't make me happy, but I would be very surprised if the theatrical experience would make a comeback.

This is like asking if McDonald's will ever serve wine and filet mignon.

This is like asking if McDonald's will ever serve wine and filet mignon. Tokyo's halfway there.

I heard some fascinating takes after the Oscars about Netflix & awards.
If one went to watch 1917 or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it's a finite event, in a quiet theatre. Many ppl who watch The Irishman, can watch in their pyjamas, &/or pause to take a walk, &/or finish it 6 days later.
I think Spielberg's take that a bad movie can hide via streaming because no one will notice, only the great ones like The Irishman are cared about. A bad movie like Cats competes on a more level playing field & gets destroyed from theatrically bombing - studios can't hide.
I think there could be a streaming Oscar within the decade, if these parameters are taken seriously.

eventually its only a matter of time before Netflix wins whether we like it or not basically, but one thing thats bothering me is their laissez faire attitude about dumping hundreds of millions on projects.

I go to an Amc and I still see a bunch of people in the theatre. I don’t think movie theaters will ever go away because if they did they knew there’d be an uproar. I still think this streaming thing is just a fad. It’ll always have an audience, but in the end it really isn’t for everyone. I’d still go see a movie on the big screen cause I like the experience.

That will probably stop. Their niche really is dramas and rom-coms at this point although there could still be an occasion A Lister movie out there. They are largely financing their productions so while they are profitable, they also have a heavy debt load that only grows the bigger their productions get. Eventually they are going to have to calm down and pay that down and replace all the licensed stuff they're losing.

They're dead for certain types of movies, not others. Movies are basically going to devolve to a few factions- Blockbusters, Indies, & Horror with an occasional raunchy comedy. Everything else can be taken seriously as a streaming production since Oscars have saw fit to keepo the minimum release standards that help Netflix right now but all the streamers will benefit from as well.

I really hope you will be proven right, but I'm quite pessimistic about the future prospects of movie theaters. People don't even buy dvds or blu rays anymore. They stopped caring about films. They may still go to the cinema with their families once or twice a year to watch the latest Pixar movie or some huge Marvel blockbuster, but that won't be enough to keep theaters afloat. Movies have lost their unique appeal. Today you can watch a movie on your wristwatch. The whole experience has been perverted, it has become throw-away and cheap.
There will still be the occasional small arthouse movie theater showing Godard or Bergman retrospectives or the new Terence Malick movie and appeal to a few nerds, but larger multiplexes will struggle.
Unless some huge catastrophe happens which would set us back technologically for decades and would make the internet crash I don't really see how we could save movie theaters.

AMC is doing too well to be shut down. Their theatre's have reclining seats, Dolby and Imax. Tell me again why I’d wanna watch a movie from home again? Sure you have some jerks on their phone, but you can always get security. I think a very small minority actually just watch streaming. Most of the people I know that only stream are people that really can’t afford to go to movies so it’s easier for them to stream which is fine. Streaming should be able to exist with theatre's but only for small stuff. I’m still buying physical media when I can. I’m not gonna subscribe to 10 different streaming services just to watch a movie. No that’s stupid when I can just buy a physical copy and OWN IT and not have the service take it away from me when they go under.
