Wanna play casting this film? You can choose a decade and use actors available at the time, or go full blown fantasy and cast actors who would not have been available at the same time.
The two existing versions are the 1963 film starring Jennifer Jones and Jason Robards. In my view she was simply too old and Robards wasn’t bad but he would have been a terrific Mr Warren ,Nicole’s father
the other version is a tv mini. It wasn’t bad but Peter Strauss was not strong enough or charming enough to command the screen . Mary STEENBURGEON is a fine actress but completely wrong for Nicole
i will post my cast later

Great question. The book is one of my "Desert iIsland" novels
Re the 62 version yes she was too old - but her innate neurotic quality sat well with the part - for me Robards (an actor I like immensely) was awful. Film overall sleek but muted.
Didn't care for the TV one. Agree Strauuss lacked charisma - I thought Steenburgen OK (I'm a big fan overall) - but did you notice - those squirrel cheeks sure do resemble Widow Selznick, no?
Dream cast???
For a big budget 1950 version
Dick - Laurence Olivier Nicole - Ava Gardner Rpsemary - Debra Paget or maybe an as yet undiscovered Grace Kelly or Carroll Baker (would need to be real looker to plausibly compete with Ava) Wouldn't Olivier and Baker be a winning combo? Baby - Joan Bennett or Claire Trevor (Bennett more plausible as Gardner's sibling) Abe - Franchot Tone or Lew Ayres Tommy - Gilbert Roland Dr Dohmler - J Carrol Naish or Joseph Calleia Mrs Hoyt - Mary Beth Hughes
Maybe Minnelli or Nick Ray directing, from a Frederic Raphael script (yes I know that one involves time travel) with a David Raksin score.

Great casting! Ava and Olivier would be wonderful
I start with my dream casting for the dad , John Huston! Imagine him doing the revelation scene!
Dick - Peter OToole - plays comedy brilliantly , as well as drama. Nicole - Julie Christie - although Jane Fonda and Lynn Redgrave might have been interesting choices Rpsemary - Genevieve Bujold Baby - Vanessa Redgrave Abe - Michael Caine Tommy - Giancarlo Gianinni Dr Dohmler - Laurence Olivier Mrs Hoyt - Maggie Smith
director - Tony Richardson, John Schlesinger maybe Mike Nichols

I doubt Mags would have taken such an insignificant part and she not really old enough to be Bujold's mum. (8 yrs older) Schlesinger is my fave but either alternative director interesting.

I was putting it more in the early 1970’s when Vanessa Redgrave and Maggie would fit their older parts well
I just discovered that the role model for Baby, Hoytie Wiborg was born in my hometown, Cincinnati. The money came from printing and there was a great deal of it. Her younger sister , Sarah married Gerald Murphy , they moved to France and invented sunbathing in Summer on the beach . They were some of the inspiration for the Divers. The major inspirations for the Divers were the Fitzgeralds themselves. I have often wondered if Scott believed that Zelda had been sexually abused. Her mental history is so murky that anything is possible. Her diagnosis as a schizophrenic is questionable. I wonder if today she would be seen as a victim of emotional abuse who would find her creative outlet when she left Scott.

Just an aside on this interesting topic:
George Cukor was originally involved with the project but had to drop out as the MY FAIR LADY issues were settled and Henry King took over the direction.
Cukor wanted Glenn Ford for the 'Dick Diver' part.

Its been a while but wasn't Mrs Hoyt quite vulgar? Also moving it back to 70s makes me question whether Vanessa would have taken such a secondary part at that stage in her career - She was pretty much a lead from 1966 through to about HOWARDS END I'd say - 1992. In 1966 it more plausible she'd take the part.
I'm giggling at the idea that sunbathing was "invented"

Interesting point. I’m assuming that Vanessa liked the director or maybe her co stars and decided to do it for a little beach time. Maybe have Franco Nero instead of Giancarlo Gianinni
The age difference seems fine to me. They are sisters after all. The difference is Nicole’s arrested development and fragility due to her illness, and Baby’s bossiness and sophistication. I think Bujold and Redgrave would carry that off beautifully.

Sure - sometimes big names lower their demands if they have personal interest. Nice idea re Franco!
its the 8 year age difference between mother Maggie and daughter Bujold I'm saying is questionable, not Julie & Vanessa - maybe we could have a Frnch language Mrs H - Micheline Presle maybe - 19 yrs Bujolds senior.

Great thought!
Or
How about Joyce Redman for the mama? Brilliant under- used actress very attractive , but mature enough to carry off the mama.

Or maybe Cybill Shepherd or Lesley Ann warren or Barbara Hershey for the 71 effort
