R.I.P. Tony Fernandez. Only thing sweeter than his stance & swing was his graceful fielding. Was here for the 80's launch with Bell-Barfield-Moseby-Stieb-Henke, & got his Jays ring in '93 keeping that lineup moving.

RIP. He replaced the very well liked Alfredo Griffin at short as he was better both offensively and defensively. Ironically Griffin came back to the Jays to end his career and was on both World Series Jays teams while Fernandez was in the trade that sent him and McGriff to SD for Alomar and Carter. Tony was back in the fold for the 2nd WS.

Side-arming like Tony at 7yrs old was like riding a bike. I've still the muscle memory all these decades later.

Man, that's too young.
RIP
He was a good player, real slick shortstop.

The epitome of the Padres: traded for him by giving up Robby Alomar and Joe Carter; traded him for DJ Dozier, Wally Whitehurst, and Raul Casanova.
RIP.

In looking up their stats I noticed Griffin won a GG the season after being traded, committing 30 (!) errors. Meanwhile Fernandez also committed 30 errors the same year. Tony won the next 4 GG in a row committing 13, 14, 14 and 6 (!) errors. Then in 1990 he committed only 9 errors in 161 games but didn't win a 5th consecutive GG and never won one again. Who was better than him in 1990?

Walt Wiess? Nope. Clue-ish: an 'Original Gangster.'
